Moving to Zurich with girlfriend

Hi all,

I am planning on moving to Zurich with my girlfriend since I have a job opportunity lined up there. Both of us speak native Dutch with good French and English skills and very basic German knowledge. We both have a European passport.

My girlfriend currently is a teacher in French and Dutch and I was wondering if it would be feasible at all to find her a job there. We're planning on taking German courses as soon as possible.

She's also open to look for more than just teaching if there are possibilities.

Thanks

Depends. She'll need to get her qualifications recognised by this organisation if she wants to teach in Swiss public schools.

She would also probably need C1/2 in German.

Re: Moving to Zurich with girlfriend

Factors in your girlfriend's favour, to find a job:
  • EU-Citizenship
  • her willingness to learn German
  • command of Dutch, which will help her to learn German
  • command of French
  • openness to consider other jobs besides teaching
  • presumably no immediate existential angst since you will be able to support her.

If she also has the following, she has a high chance of finding something:
  • general attitude of willingness to adapt to life in Switzerland
  • acceptance of having several part-time jobs, e.g. offering extra-lessons to school children (there are platforms to offer this), or getting a small job teaching a few hours at a language school
  • experience as a waitress or shop assistant, or willingness to try it out
  • experience in producing things to sell at markets, or willingness to try it out and good budgeting sense to make it financially viable
  • readiness to work in a job to do with providing care (e.g. cooking, shopping, cleaning, helping with transport) to children, people who are ill, or old people, especially those who live at home
  • good spacial perception and sense of orientation, so she could become a bicycle courier
  • a friendly, open personality and a respectful manner.

Granted, none of the above kinds of work are commesurate with her teaching qualification! They can, however, be a start while she is working on her language skills, applying for recognition of her qualifications and building up connections. Without a command of German, she is highly unlikely to find a job as a teacher, except if she gets lucky at an international school (if her command of English is very good), or part-time at a language shool.

As I understand it, an EU Citizen is allowed to be in Switzerland for 3 months for the purpose of looking for work.

If she intends to stay here longer, and especially if she has not found work within that time, earning enough to support herself, then you and she might have to consider
  • applying for a concubine permit (= you will have to prove that your relationship is long-term and serious, and that you earn enough to support her permanently, and that you guarantee to cover all her costs), or
  • getting married (which, oddly, comes with fewer responsibilties and is easier to get out of, should it not workout).

Re: Moving to Zurich with girlfriend

For the German courses try Alpha Sprachwelt at Stadelhofen. Itís quite expensive, about 1300CHF a month, but the classes are 3 hrs a day, 5 days a week so you can make progress.

As for teaching, it might be possible to pick up a few hours teaching French or Dutch as a Foreign Language, but there are so many language teachers available in Zurich the hourly rate is quite low. Itís hard to find a stable well-paying job as a language teacher unless you can work in state school.
Iíd recommend putting serious though/effort into that something else.

If I were her, I'd be sending a CV over to these people, and asking them for advice... https://www.lfz.ch/
