RAV, temporary employment and minimum application numbers

I have been offered a temporary role and I know the RAV will require me to demonstrate, while I am on the contract, that I have continued to look for a permanent role - which, ultimately, is in both our interests.

However, my minimum number of applications is quite high (12) and I have struggled to meet that some months, with quality applications. Additionally, what I do is fairly specialised and networking will be much more effective but that is also time consuming.

Does anyone have any experience of agreeing a lower, more manageable threshold number with the RAV? My counsellor is very likeable but pretty strict and tough.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks
CW

There is nothing stopping you from applying for jobs that you know you won't end up getting if the RAV are being strict with you on the quantity of applications.
I was once on unemployment but was lucky to have a fair advisor. At the first appointment I took along all of my applications made even before registering as unemployed, thereafter he set the number required lower as I had already applied by email/online to quite a few more than he expected.

Re: RAV, temporary employment and minimum application numbers

Have you added stuff like "updating LinkedIn profile"? Or "meeting xyz for coffee to discuss possible openings at ABC company"?

All that stuff is acceptable so long as you don't do loads of it.

Also, send out a couple of speculative applications to related firms, which doesn't take a minute and also counts to your target of 12.

You could try to negotiate fewer searches but it's unlikely.

I agree it's hard, especially at this time of the year when holidays mean that there are fewer job adverts being published.

Time to look at going for jobs that are not advertised. Company websites. Spontaneous applications.

Hi, thanks for your comments.

She is really pretty tough.... she's already told me that no "networking", "updating LinkedIn" etc allowed. And I am only allowed 3 speculative applications per month!

Not good. And doesn't make sense as only a small proportion of jobs that are going are actually advertised.

So instead of trying to round down your number of applications from 12, perhaps you should try to negotiate this instead. LinkedIn is a major source of recruitment nowadays. And you said you have a niche field so it makes sense that you are not going to be able to hit the targets of someone who is, say, a Swiss receptionist.

Either that or, as someone already mentioned, apply for stuff you know you aren't going to get but is perhaps in the vague direction of your field.

Your adviser doesn't sound terribly experienced if she's as strict and inflexible as you say.

You can apply for ANY job, anywhere in the world if you are having trouble with no's. I usually did 11/12 foreign jobs nothing they can say.

It depends on the length of the contract. In my experience you are normally required to seek a new position during the last 3 months of the contract.

Re: RAV, temporary employment and minimum application numbers

If your CV or your knowledge fits to 50% of the openings , apply for the job.
It is only officialdom to satisfy the RAV Agent,so It can't so hard to do 3 applications a week.

Re: RAV, temporary employment and minimum application numbers

Just don't take it to yourself. At first I was also feeling bad when I couldn't find a number of suitable posts to apply to and I had to send an application for something I'm not quite suitable or worst completely unqualified just to fill the spreadsheet. But I got used to it, I never try to fit my application to any of those unsuitable jobs. Instead I send my best application. The net outcome is that I may be lucky to hit some un-advertised post and I always meet the monthly count.
