Is it net or gross salary? If it is net (more less CHF4200 per month) then it should be enoughto live comfortably | This user would like to thank jacek for this useful post: | |

I agree with Jacek. If it´s net then you´d be ok.

40k net a year means 3333 chf/month....Rents are high here and you have to pay for your health insurance yourself. It is compulsory, not optional AND it can be expensive. People are different, but I would not be able to put money aside with that salary. Food is very expensive in CH and we all gotta eat...

I am sure that you would be able to find better opportunities in time. What is your qualifications/degree if I may ask? I work for ABB and software development engineers earn twice as much what you mentioned. Have you ever tried to contact ABB or Alstom or banking sector? Have you got any IT experience?

What are your qualifications and experience. I know test engineers who earn easily double that, and contractors who earn more than three times that amount. If you are fresh out of university with zero experience and no better opportunities, it may be worth it just to get the experience. But I do not think you will be able to save much money earning that much in Zürich. | Quote: | | | | | 40k after tax cut, and 20k after deducting health insurance. | | | | | Insurance won't cost you 20K a year unless you are particularly old and unhealthy. Check out http://comparis.ch for an idea. But you are looking at 2k-5k a year.

I don't normally post on these kind of threads, but 50K is taking the p1ss for that kind of position in Zürich.

That salary does seem low for a real job in Zurich.
But putting that aside, to answer you original question, you could get by on your salary, but not save too much. A lot of PhD students live comfortably on that amount, some even living on their own in central Zurich and going out once in a while. Others share an apartment and live quite well. You couldn't eat out every day, but if you cook at home often and save the fun for the weekend, you'd be okay.
But as the other respondents have indicated, you should also look into why you are being offered a lower than market salary. Be sure you're not being taken advantage off since you are currently in India.

This salary is much too low. They are taking advantage, unless they are paying your housing & health insurance. Is this a permanent job or a temporary contract?

I know PhD students at the ETH earn more than 60k a year.
Perhaps you should negotiate.

| | What is a good salary in Zurich to allow one to live comfortably I was going through your answers and am happy to say, many of you give a lot of assitance to ignorants like me. This is my first posting and am hoping to benefit from it. Thank u in advance. Here's my story. I am pretty sure I've got the job in Zurich. It's an international company. The position is Software testing. Since I have never been in Zurich, I was wondering if u can help me with some figures: - What is a good salary in Zurich to allow one to live comfortably
- How much of the gross salary is deducted for taxes?insurance?others I should know about
- How much do rent cost?Low and high?
- Do I need a car to go around in Zurich or the public transportation system is good
- Does Zurich have a good social and night life or it's only good to work
- If I only know English, will I have trouble communicating in daily life
I know I loaded you with questions but I am hoping that you will be nice enough to answer my queries |
