Can you hire a job coach to help you find a job?

I am asking for a friend. She moved her for her husbands work, she has a college degree and extensive background in a certain field that unfortunately doesnít allow her to work in the same job here, because her overseas qualifications arenít accepted. In addition, she isnít fluent in German yet and this would take some time.

She has tried for over one year finding a job on her own without any success. She is willing to work in a variety of fields. Is it possible to hire a type of job coach or agency to help her find work through her contacts? Sort of the same way RAV works... If so, does anybody have any recommendations? She is based in Basel, but willing to commute a hour somewhere.

Thanks!

You are not looking for a job coach, you are looking for a miracle worker!

She needs to at least get the language covered if she is to have any chance and she wold be better advised to spend her money at that. If she has been here a year then she should have at least covered A1 and be ready to start B1 at this stage.

You can hire the Pope, whether it will help or not is a completely different kettle of fish

This company offers coaching for job seekers:

https://www.newplacement.ch/

This company offers a course in job application strategies in English, which RAV uses:

http://www.cm-p.ch/

An organization called AOZ offers coaching and placement services for job seekers with limited German skills:

https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/aoz/de/...tegration.html

I donít think itís a miracle to find work when you want to work hard and are motivated - worked for me eight years ago and now I have an established career. I hope the same for my friend.

She can try Starbucks as they accept English speakers, just for pocket money until she learns German.

Geez, Switzerland is the last country in the world I'd want to be in if my skills/degree were not recognized.

When I hear "job coach" or "life coach" my first instinct is to question why someone would take career/job advice from a person who cannot themselves find a proper job...

My second instinct is that you might be better off just calling yourself a life/job coach and charging other people for your advice!

I would also go for an intensive language course. If she can show that she successfully went through that, it will give a positive impression about her personality to potential employers.

OTOH if she is here for over a year and has made no progress in the language, that will unfortunately also give an impression to potential employers and the longer she waits, the worse that gets.

Re: Can you hire a job coach to help you find a job?

Depends heavily WHAT language she is fluent in.. if she is fluent in Chinese, she should be careful when walking through Lucerne, or she'll be shanghai'ed into one of the many luxury watch shops to work for in a second. Same with Arabic in Interlaken.

"Plain" English obviously not being thought after, but if you speak SOME foreign languages, you're a very much interesting asset for quite some companies.

Working as a tourist guide might also be an option, or anything really you don't need German. But obviously, if she's living in the German-speaking area of Switzerland, one would expect someone to be at a reasonable level of German within a few months, even more after a year of living here! Integration, and all that..

Re: Can you hire a job coach to help you find a job?

How could someone in a few months be fluent enough in a language in order to speak and write professionally in it? I’m talking office work here, not fast food jobs.

Integration is vital, but total fluency in German in a few months to a year is unrealistic. I do find a lot of hesitance in the expat community to learn...it is so important.

Re: Can you hire a job coach to help you find a job?

I used to live in Basel and I would suggest she joins the professional women's group of basel. they have a job hunting support group and montly meetings which can help with building a network https://www.pwg-basel.ch/job-hunt-support/. Many women whose skills are not recoginsed in switzerland also look into starting their own businesses and members were full of useful advice. The important thing is to figure out how to use transferable skills to reinvent oneself, i.e. as it was going to take me years to be fluent enough to work as a social worker in german, I moved into recruitment/HR which I could do in english. Also, personal connections are really important.

The spouse career centre is dedicated to job hunting for accompanying partners and I have heard mixed results but it is good for Swissifying your resume and what to expect on the job market here. The fees quickly mount up if you are paying yourself.
