Can my boss oblige me to be happy?

I am completing my notice period in a bar and I didnt adapt at all at the night shifts, thats why I quit and I am doing my job well but sometimes I am unhappy because of several reasons...including the fact that I dont sleep anymore and many people dont accept my accent and they either are rude or laugh and this is driving me insane.
Than my boss said I need to be available and happy because I work 100% and (not his words, but what he meant) it is not his problem I dont like to work in the evening....I even said I wouldn't mind comming less and have the $$ discounted, my problem is not the $$$ and I am never rude with anybody, the day that we had a complain I have had some personal issues. I am normally very friendly but I was even unhappier for the fact that they didnt stand up for the team.
Also during holidays I am working every day. Nobody in the team cared at all and in the beginning we agreed to share the work on weekends, holidays and night shifts. But is everything over my back and again, of course I am unhappy with that.

I was wondering till what point they can request you to be happy????
I mean...this is a bit insane and weird pressure above anybody's control, right?

Of course not...and I dont care to be honest. I dont have any bad reference...this will probably be my first bad if they decide so.

You are really wondering if someone can force you to be happy when you're not? Is that even a serious question?

If you are unhappy then tell your boss what you want to change or leave. You can realistically do nothing else.

Re: Can my boss oblige me to be happy?

I am wondering because they said I have to be available because of the contract and do my job and that is part of my job.
I already quit...but I have the notice period, that I tried to negotiate, and they didnt want. They said they need me.

I know sound stupid, but I don't want they to say I am no available or doing "my job" and not pay me.

Re: Can my boss oblige me to be happy?

Well, you work in a bar and part of that job is being friendly.

But you're asking if the boss can force you to be happy. And you say you're not happy. My guess is, being happy is what you would like to be.
So, if your boss is able to force you to be happy - let him do so, for Christ sake!

If you think the above is silly, rethink your question.

Re: Can my boss oblige me to be happy?

I dont think what you wrote is silly, I think is stupid, considering you understood my question and is beeing a snobe pretending you are better.
But is like this till the first setback you have here and come running asking for advise and I hope you remember the stupid answer you gave.

But that said, as usual this forum doesnt help with shit, most people are just here to desagree with you.

Cheers.

I guess, part of the job, when working at some kinds of bars is to play the role of an ever happy "dancing monkey". Has nothing to do with how you really feel. You can wear that like a uniform, which you take off, when the shift is over.

You work in customer service... by default you need to be friendly and courteous. Can you not just do what they ask for the notice period and (assuming it is 1 month) and then leave on good terms? It's not going to kill you.

You can't make yourself happy. But you can pretend. it's called "acting". Like clowns - laughing on the outside, crying on the inside.

Yes, of course, if lots of people disagree with you that just makes it a conspiracy, right?

Seriously, if this is how you react to customers and fellow staff in your job I'm not at all surprised you feel in danger of being kicked out without being paid for your notice period. And why did you decide to work full time in a bar anyway if you find it so difficult?

Re: Can my boss oblige me to be happy?

It is your job to treat customers with respect and hospitality. Once customers start complaining, you haven't done your job. Everyone can have a one-off but if complaints continue, your boss may ask you to leave.

On the other hand, it is incredibly unfair for your boss to ask you to work every day during the holidays unless you don't mind.

As you stated that you don't like the job, I think you need to look at this as a temporary situation until you find something else.

Merry Christmas

They can ask you everything they want. You have to think of this situation more pragmatically - hang in there till the end of your contract, be polite and do your job at least with a neutral look on your face (in my very limited experience, never have I seen friendly bartenders tbh...well with a couple of exceptions)...don't give customers reasons to complain. If you can't pretend pretend pretend keep yourself busy all the time - clean, wipe glasses, arrange drinks, avoid eye contact. After your contract is over, perhaps you should really reconsider your career choices.
Hang in there and Merry Christmas!

Re: Can my boss oblige me to be happy?

your boss can certainly ask that you do your job until the end of the notice period.

Customers don't usually go the length of complaining to the boss just because you're not cheerful, as long as you're nice, which is totally part of the job.
