Common ways to make it big in Zürich?

I wonder how most people make it big in Zürich. And if it's worth the effort. I think about all those guys you see with super cars, 3-5mill$ homes and so on.

I see alot of swinging salary ranges and sometime wonder how to hit the higher brackets like 200.000 - 400.000chf/y over longterm.
(not just edge-case emergency contracting for 1-2years, needs to be a career you con maintain over 20-30years without burnout)

What kind of jobs can give you these earnings?

Please be as specific as possible. (skills needed, working hours, company expectations, hour-rates, pros/cons)

Do you have some real example in Tech, Finance, Pharma, Medicin? I guess this is the only industries that hit these super high ranges.

It's my impression that tech contracting can hit around 700-1000chf/day (180.000/y) in finance but rates are falling as outsource get more common and it seems that most companies just don't want to go higher out of principle, is other industries similar?

Also it's my impression it's hard to get enough clients as small business owner to hit 200.000+ so the individual salaries of top earners in big corporations almost are bigger than the profits of most small/medium businesses and getting a mid/big business up and running is statistically extremely hard/unlikely to happen unless you come out of an entrepreneurial family and have backing from young age.

So i'm trying to look for how people do this without looking at the outliers like people that inherit, people that have no life outside work, people that sacrifice everything (often not much to learn from them since most people don't want to be in their shoes anyways).

And also do anyone have a pleasant life-quality/balance with these earnings?

Re: Common ways to make it big in Zürich?

You are a frontend developer, so tbh what you desire is beyond your reach in you current profession.

A full change of direction is going to take a lot of money and time to educate yourself, but if you are willing to: Notary, lawyer, chirurg, politician to name some of the many jobs that can get you where you want to be, but I expect you want it all to be more easy within big investment and/or long studies, so that limits your options. You are a developer, see what earns the most and work yourself into that direction, and hope market does not change in the meantime causing you to having bet on the wrong horse.

Re: Common ways to make it big in Zürich?

In a company I used to work for we had a young woman hired straight after PhD. She very quickly went from normal designer to group leader to principal project leader (but had no real clue about designing, I've seen her work). Regularly she used to show up to work wearing short black dresses, heels, the twins on display, things like that (and this in a nerdy engineering environment).

Now I'm not saying things are related, but if you're female and 'willing to do whatever it takes' ....

More seriously, I think the best is to work in a field where lots of money changes hands. Things like banking or real estate. I think people think in percentages, like the commission of a real estate agent is a percentage of the property price. A few % for a real estate agent does not raise many eyebrows, but when you look at the amount to pay (in absolute) compared to the work they do...
Also with the car I just bought, the radio in the option list costs only a few % or the car price. But if you would see the same radio in the Mediamarket you would never ever pay 1250 chf for it (I did not either by the way, have a tablet and bluetooth speaker installed in the car)

Oh man you really are hilarious... you really want us to really go to the effort to plan your life for you? A quick and easy guide to being rich and happy?

Sorry, but only you can make that happen and that takes time and effort, not relying on people on strangers on forums to tell you what to do with your life.

Probably should change the title to “Lazy Ways To Make It Big In Zurich”. If you want to earn the kind of salary range you are talking about then you need to be willing to concentrate on it alone.

As an IT person I can tell you the days of invoicing 40k plus a month is long gone. If you were not here in the 80s - early 90s like the rest of us you missed it.

Best idea might be to write a book on the topic and then spend your time flogging it to dudes like yourself!

Re: Common ways to make it big in Zürich?

Jesus seriously?

Ever heard of Google? How about actually finding out one or two things on your own.

You can make a lot of money in most industries and many jobs. There, question answered.

And lol, sure, 400k will just be delivered to you on a silver platter if you work a relaxed 35-hour week. Geez. In most cases, subject to very, very few exceptions, to get to (and often sustain) a certain salary, people have to work their a$$ off you know...

I understand hookers can make that sort of cash.

I'd go to the Langstrasse and ask one how much they charge for professional tips and mentoring.

Some of them will do anything for money.

Re: Common ways to make it big in Zürich?

Do you have more examples? What titles, industries and so on..

Eg.
Lead Quantitative Analyst for Google?
Top 10% trader at UBS?
Top 20% Real estate agents?

Would be great to get more examples of setups that get you close to this range. I know it’s probably not easy but some industries are much easier to make solid pay than others. Eg. Much easier to make 200.000 in Tech Finance job than it is Is in Mechanical Engineering for example. Some skills pay off more even though it’s not “Harder”.

Instead of selling yourself as an IT prostitute, start an IT consulting shop, i.e. become an IT pimp. Hire cheap foreign IT slaves and sell them for 120 CHF/hour. Tip: Pay 10% of the rate as kickbacks to the hiring managers via an offshore trust company, this will boost your business.

Re: Common ways to make it big in Zürich?

Looks to me like you are just taking the piss, to use a colloquial British expression. The idea that you can just suddenly decide to become a top paid estate agent or mechanical engineer is, well, "insane" would be close to how I'd express it.

I made very nice money doing research in the perfume industry, almost reaching a modest 200k a year without long hours or busting a gut. All you have to do is study chemistry intensively for 7-8 years, including a PhD at a top university, then get a job in research, publish a few dozen scientific papers in good journals and have a few patentable ideas. Simple!

It's quite easy.

Buy people like yourself at market value, and sell them for what they think they're worth.
