P.S. I have heard of similar salaries at private schools around here, despite 30k/year tuition.
So someone somewhere must be making a fortune. How do you get in on this racket?!

Re: Advice [a job option in St. Gallen]

I would pile in and say it's a fairly lousy salary and not comparable with more than MPS 2 in the UK. I'm assuming you're both experienced teachers. I think the only thing that "might"make it worth your while is if kids get free or massively, and I mean massively, like 90%, fee reductions if attending your new school.

I am new to this forum and I seriously need some advice.

We have friends in Geneva and have visited often. However my wife and me have both been offered jobs in St Gallen, the other side of the country, and the wages are 61k CHF each. There is also the option that I can top up the wages with extra work.

Now our friends would say we would really struggle on that combined wage of 122k CHF in Switzerland. Would we struggle? We also have 2 boys aged 8 & 11 so daycare is not a consideration.

I really want to take the job. It’s a dream job for me in a dream location and my career development would be really boosted working there.

My wife is prevaricating and is concerned that money wise it would be really tough.

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanksbin advance
Strictly speaking about this combined income...you'll be comfortable if you don't spend your money on silly stuff. If you want the experience, what can you lose? The salary isn't great but you might get somewhere after a while. If it was just this salary per household I would have said no way, but the combined income is OK.(depending on how you envision your life here, of course)
Salaries have decreased and you might not get any other offer here. Just saying.

At the school in question, I suspect all the money disappears into grounds and building maintenance and the daily three course silver service dinners. It's a genuinely magnificent establishment, and it provides a very good quality of education to a very special demographic. Unfortunately, teachers' salaries are invisible to visitors, so...

It reminds me of those luxurious hotels and spas...I always wondered if the cleaning ladies, waitresses, bartenders etc etc are benefiting from this opulence in any way or form.
