Re: The struggle of finding a life science-related job

Dont feel down on yourself.

It is tough, but this is quite normal.

It is more important for you to effectively network. Are you just talking to people in passing or establishing a relationship and adding value. Maintain these relationships, these are the ones that will be fruitful. Just taking down the name of someone at a seminar/conference is not enough.

There are many startups that are also actively recruiting and are always looking.

Best way to find a software job in Switzerland?

Hey there!

I am considering moving to Switzerland (German speaking part). Is it easy to find a dev job here as a newcomer with relatively decent experience (fluent in German & 4 years of JS, React, Vue and some Python)?

Do you have any job boards/websites/recruiters to recommend? Maybe LinkedIN is a better option?

What are your experiences (question especially for expats)?

You only get hired if you can show your adeptness at using search functions on internet sites.

Seriously, this question, or variants thereof are asked frequently on the forum

https://www.englishforum.ch/search2.php?q=it+job

Suggest you have a dig around and post questions indicating what your research has indicated so far.

HTH.

There are plenty of jobs for German speakers in full stack development in Basel and Zürich.

You can also try https://swissdevjobs.ch/ which features:
  • salary ranges provided by the companies
  • methodologies, like: Do they write tests, Is there a build system in place
  • detailed tech stack

Disclosure: I am the co-founder of this job board - happy to answer your questions if you have any.

I'd recommend you to use good ol' JobServe for IT roles, or simply Indeed.

Re: Wildlife Biologist wants to know - are there jobs?

How did you get on in your job search? Any update? My wildlife biologist daughter, specializing in herps is looking for a job in Switzerland from April onwards. She’s interested in wildlife crime. Any pointers would be helpful.

Job Seeking Advice

Hello everyone. I would like to get your opinions and suggestions regarding my wife’s situation. My wife moved to Zurich through family reunion procedure and got B Permit. She is a Biology teacher by profession and worked in Turkish public schools for 5 years. She knows German language in A2 level, but unfortunately no English. We have found out that she can work in Swiss schools after she gets C2 language certificate and also if her diploma is recognized by ministry of education in Switzerland. First of all , she plans to improve her German in here but also she would like to start working in temporary jobs if possible. What kind of jobs can she find here ?. What kind of trainings can she get here to find a job easily ?. We would appreciate if you can share your similar experiences.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Re: Job Seeking Advice

With A2 in German and no English this can be pretty hard... I assume she speaks Turkish natively, maybe try go around turkish shops and ask if they need help...

Maybe some babysitting?
However, what in my opinion would make most sense (if financially possible), she should start doing those intensive German courses asap (these are ~4 hours a day - 5 days a week) - treat that as an investment into the future - this will pay off.

Re: Job Seeking Advice

From A2 to C2 is a big leap !

Maybe Macdonnalds or similar where she has to face clients and speak/practice German.

She also needs to understand, this is only a means to an end though !

Re: Job Seeking Advice

"Hilfskraft" work, such as packing, cleaning, assembly, can often be done by individuals with limited local language knowledge.

Cleaning and building crews can be composed of people of the same nationality. Often at least one person in the crew speaks the local language well.

Hair salons sometimes have non-Swiss employees who do speak the local language at a basic level. One of the other local language employees in the salon then instructs the non-local language speaking barber/ hair stylist how the customer's hair is to be cut.

Re: Best way to find a software job in Switzerland?

If you’re good in german, search in german, i think a lot of local firms really struggle to find developers and their adverts are in the local language only.

Re: Best way to find a software job in Switzerland?

+1 for https://swissdevjobs.ch/ and - https://stackoverflow.com/jobs.

You can also look at:

Also, check out this sort of dated list of SWE/SRE hiring companies around Zurich https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...t3s/edit#gid=0.

From the "FAANG" and alike there are Google and Microsoft obviously, small teams of Apple and Facebook (computer vision 3D). Github and Elastic have legal entities in Switzerland, so they can hire you as an FT employee. If you wanted to discuss opportunities at Palantir, feel free to DM (working there).
