Advice re:career path post-separation, post-maternity
Here's my basic info:
- I am a B1/B2-level French speaker, native English speaker, C-permit holder.
- I have two bachelors degrees from the US, in Communications (specializations in Media Studies and Video Production) and Global Peace & Justice Studies (a humanities version of an International Relations degree).
- I have some work experience in content writing, non-contract experience in tutoring English
- I have 5+ years volunteer experience facilitating programs with various arts-based nonprofit organizations
I have been living in Switzerland (canton VD) for 7 years now but have barely worked, staying home with my children and occasionally working freelance while my husband worked full-time.
This past year I have separated from my husband and am currently in a heated custody battle. It's now necessary to find work to make ends meet. I want to find a part-time job that can make use of my skill set, but it's no secret that the nonprofit sector isn't much of a salary, especially to at least partially support two young children.
I've considered getting a teaching degree to teach english in the public schools, as that would yield a good salary plus school-centric work hours, so I can be present for my kids, but I also know that the market for English teachers is pretty saturated and I'd surely need another degree, but I could see myself as a teacher if nonprofit work is practically impossible.
I welcome any leads on which of these two career paths (or something along their spectrum) would be worth considering in the Swiss job market, and what resources could serve as a good jumping off point in pursuing them.
Thanks in advance.
