Are salaries for untrained people really that high?

Ok i know that switzerland has a high cost of living, but when i googled some salaries i found out that you make around 66.000chf a year which just seems absurdly high for an unskilled employee, are these salaries actually correct?

For ease of those of us scrolling on a tiny phone, can you quote the bit that says CHF66K applies to unskilled workers? The only ref I can see to that amount is for postal workers or av salary in Ticino.

You suggested that that the report states the ‘average wage for the unskilled worker is CHF66K’

I didn’t find that information. Can you copy/paste it?

"Postal Worker: CHF 66,600"

i am pretty sure postal worker qualifies as unskilled

She means that postal workers are not ‘untrained’ workers.

If you think 66k is a lot you're in for a surprise. That's barely enough for one person to live by with minimum or no savings in any of the major cities.

Probably enough to save something if you live in a village and definitely not enough to feed a family on.

I am quite surprised that this hasn't escalated to the occasional groan fest.
Nice :)

To topic. Thanks to the berufsbildungssystem (apprenticeships) there are only a few jobs for unskilled workers. Most of them in restaurants or construction sites. You won't make 66k im neither of them though.

Chf 5'500.-- for an unskilled job.....touch on the high side maybe but not unrealistic.

But, no employer will be able to or want to try and apply for a work/resident permit for you at this level AND you'll need to be fluent in the local language in order to understand orders from you many superiors as it is not they who will want to be speaking English to you and local language to everybody else.

Highly likely you'll also need to know how to read and write the local language too.

I wonder if there might be some confusion on terms. The link above shows salaries for the position of clerk.

That position in Switzerland is likely not untrained - the employee would likely have done an Kaufmannische apprenticeship. Or one of several other apprenticeships.

The Swiss apprenticeship system means that most full time jobs here are indeed fully trained.

---

Jobs that do not necessarily require specific training, such as household work, are typically better paid in Switzerland than elsewhere. The going rate is usually CHF 20-35 per hour, but could be up in CHF 50 per hour range. That gets you in the ballpark of the salary you mention.

Market forces play a large part in the salary for an 'untrained' household employee; there are fewer people willing to do these jobs while the demand is huge.

But be aware - expectations are high as well, especially at the higher end of the range. 'Untrained' does not mean unskilled.

If you are saying ‘postal worker’ as in Mail carrier, you need a diploma (after obligatory school) and an apprenticeship . If you are talking about a postal clerk in the post office, you need a CFC in commerce or logistics and an apprenticeship. Neither of those are untrained.

ok so to sum up

i mix up the two terms.

fair enough that most jobs require some sort of education, however the idea that education is mandatory for jobs that almost anyone can do just seems really foreign to me.

Next time you catch yourself thinking about how mostly everything works like clockwork in Switzerland you can return to this thread and remind yourself why. :D

The Swiss way of thinking seems to be that one needs training and qualifications for almost every job. Whether you think anyone can do any job or not, the Swiss don't think anyone can do any job. ;)

If you want a job here, you'll need to work on your approach. :)
