Re: Pay rise request went wrong

There’s not much of a debate
Perhaps Gaizzie will tell us how it went and hopefully she’ll have good news.

Re: Pay rise request went wrong

reminds me of a situation I had many many years ago, I worked for a very high tech company who'd just won the biggest IT project in the UK for years, we were a small team, very specialised, a few guys thought this would be the perfect time to demand a pay rise so off they went to tell the boss.

A few minutes later the whole team gets called into the conference room, CEO walks in and proclaims "none of you are indispensable and if you don't like it f*** off"

no one got a raise and no one left

I experienced pretty much the opposite once. There was one machine in the factory that was looked after by two guys, a senior guy and a junior guy. The senior guy had pretty much hand written most of the software and designed the circuitry. Documentation was virtually inexistent. A setup like that should really not have been allowed, but then expediency was more important than due process.

One day the senior guy asked for a salary hike and the manager said nope. An argument ensued that ended in the senior guy walking out. They promoted the junior guy into the senior's job and agreed he would look after the machine from now on. Soon the machine developed some foibles and became a bottleneck in the production process. The ex-junior guy had previously claimed he knew everything about the machine but it turned out he didn't. So they phoned the old senior guy who agreed to come in and fix it but on the basis of a consultancy contract with appropriate fees. I think they ended up paying him more money for considerably fewer hours worked, and did this for about 2 years which was the time it took to procure a new machine.

Re: Pay rise request went wrong

Hello everyone...

I got everything I asked and some extra bonus.
And he actually said that I definitely deserve it and I am hard worker with a great future in the company...

So it seems that I did good that I asked....

We all have bad days, you included and we all are embarrassed about our reaction later on the same day usually.

Re: Pay rise request went wrong

Age (which could also mean more experience and more number of years in service) and family size could influence salary, as they want your ends meet or else you leave soon.

Thank you all.

What is your opinion about my supervisor's reaction?

Is it true that if you are older and you have family you get more than others in the same position with the same qualifications?

….suggestion.... if the subject is rediscussed, don't speak about anybody else's salary. It's a cultural no-no here. Focus only on why you deserve to be considered (for whatever it is you want).
I am not sure that is really the case. I can recall at least two employers mentioning coworkers while having a conversation about salary.

Or it is maybe I am the only woman in managerial position?
Unfortunately I am afraid it might be down to this.
Many companies (not necessarily just Swiss) are still very gender-biased.

Edit: Congrats on chasing it through! Well done!
