?? is this a 'proper' job or are you working for an outsourcer? will you actually be employed by the company you're sitting at day after day??

Congratulations!
Nidwalden is a top location. Right on the doorstep of the alps and the lakes, could not be better if you are outdoorsy.

You also have the bright lights of Luzern just up the road.

70000? Forget it. I have a junior position that is paid really quite a bit better than this in the sticks, in a less lucrative industry.

Even I find that I have to watch my money with the amount of steep charges for certain things, and with a cheap flat being difficult to find. Also bear in mind that if you have a student loan, the payments go up quite a lot when you get the new job.

Hello to all,

as final update, at the end I have obtained an annual salary of 85.000 CHF, after the technical interview with the client. A friend of mine already in the country recommended to me to press a bit more after the final acceptance of the client.

Only thing is that the new contract does not include the contribution to KTG (payment during illness), should I worry?

Regards.
I don't know about KTG but congratulations on getting to 85K from the initial offer of 70K. I am especially impressed that after being offered 78K, there was still room to negotiate. This proves that negotiating at several stages of the hiring process is possible.

Good luck with the move. The first months will be tight but you will do fine after the initial expenses. Keep an eye out for 2nd hand furniture being sold instead of investing in brand new, do not sign any long terms contracts without reading carefully and try to negotiate the rent too!

Depends on when you study for your degree - my dad only graduated from his first degree when he was 45

The poster is Spanish, so it is unlikely to be an issue for that reason, unless they studied abroad... but you never know

So you are in effect a contractor then, not a proper full time employee, all the downsides of contracting with none of the benefits, your employer is massively taking the piss

Re: job offer: 70000 CHF as software engineer, what are your thoughts?

A few quick thoughts:

* CHF 85.000 is not great for a senior developer, but to break into the Swiss market maybe it's okay for a time.
* Beware of your oursourcer, many are decent and fair but there are more than enough that are not.
* If you are a true contractor (as in, fully responsible for all of your taxes and pension payments) then you are likely being grossly underpaid.
* See what your contract says about going direct with the company hiring you. If things go very well you may be able to switch without your oursourcer stopping you.* Swiss business culture is very different than Italy and Spain. Expect some bumps given how hierarchical and rule-oriented the Swiss can be.

That said, welcome to the beautiful land of Switzerland, good luck, and keep us up to date with how things go for you!

Re: job offer: 70000 CHF as software engineer, what are your thoughts?

Sorry but maybe I have not explained well.

I will work with an undefined-time contract (I don't know the exact name), but with an external consultancy company in the client's facilities.

I will not be freelancer neither contractor.

Then CHF 85K is not so bad. Not great but not bad, and it solves some of the concerns I had listed.

After a year or two you should be able to move up to a salary one would more expect from a senior developer.

Also, if you can master German to a reasonable degree it will really open up doors for you.

You effectively are a contractor but are earning much less than a contractor would earn. Your "undefined time contract" is worthless. If the customer has no more work for you and your agency doesn´t have another customer lined up, you will be sacked immediately.

You are 100% a contractor as they aren’t paying your illness , I can guess who your employer is any they are well known, you need to find out exactly what deductions they are paying and what you are paying eg social and pension
