Junior position salary .. 1500 CHF/gross? Is this normal?

Friend of mine, EU-national - recently got a job offer in Lausanne area.
It's a junior position in Digital Marketing team, with job tasks primarily on graphic design, event management, social media management, CMS management, video editing etc.

Full-time, 100%, no office perks or bonuses, with a nice salary of 1500 CHF per month.
She has relevant degree, is in late twenties, has few years of experience from various fields.

Is this normal? Are Junior position salaries really that low?

We paid the guy who was an intern the same amount. Are you sure this is not an internship?

18 000 chf per year? Gross?
That’s ridiculous.
Is it an internship or stagière position? They do tend to take the piss a bit with salaries for those sort of positions but even so it is very low given her age and experience.

Or an apprenticeship?

That what my daughter gets in her second year of as a chef apprenticeship.

This could cover the cost of accommodation alone, if your friend is lucky enough to find one at this price.

You meant 15k per month would be very nice

It's normal... for an internship.

Maybe you were being sarcastic with "a nice salary of" or you mistyped 1500 and meant 15000. But that would be too high for a junior position, so tell your friend to tell them that slavery time is over long time ago

If it is Junior and not "practice", "internship", "apprenticeship" I would be suprised for anything below 3000-3500-4500 CHF/month for 100%.

Sounds like she is being taken on as an apprentice/intern.

Since my daughter is in exactly that situation now - looking to be taken on, I'd say it would be the top end of the range. Most of the bigger companies offer 1,200 to 1,500, but the small ones offer the minimum rate - 600.

Probably more important is where is it leading? if it is part of a progression to a professional position fine, but if it is just temp work.... probably not.

A graduate in her late twenties, does not sound like an apprenticeship.

If I'm not wrong, the official poverty threshold in Switzerland is around 2300 CHF/month for a single person.

We don't have a minimum national wage in Switzerland and in any case it is not relevant - if she wants to get into the field, she will have to compete against the others looking for a similar position. That is why I asked the OP what is it leading to... it is just casual or temporary work or the first step on a career path.

I got 1200/month as in intern.

In 1982.

And a 1600 bonus at the end of the three months.

I agree, I was just providing some reference, because OP says it's a junior position offered to a graduate.

if she has relevant experience, it doesn't make sense, because that's an intern wage.

Acceptable for a limited time if you're looking to enter an inflated field with no previous experience.
If they're presenting this as a totally normal job with an unlimited duration contract, it sounds like a rip-off. Junior doesn't mean you should get a non-living wage.

This looks like what an apprentice would get. I know someone who's doing an apprenticeship in finance and she's getting something around this amount. Btw, she's working only 2 or 3 days per week, the rest of it she's in school.

Your friend seem to be offered a regular full-time position, but the salary is absurdly low. She won't be able to cover rent, health insurance and food, let alone any other "luxury". If she's already living here with someone else.....she might consider the offer just to get some work experience in CH, otherwise...just kindly advise her to say No.

And the chef apprenticeships are pretty much the highest paid of the apprenticeships offered in Switzerland, most of them are less than that.

Re: Junior position salary .. 1500 CHF/gross? Is this normal?

Thanks for the responses. I checked in with her and understood that this specific position was intended to be an intern-position, but due to her skillset in relevant areas it was changed from Intern role -> to Junior role.

This kind of explains the oddly low salary number I guess.
Still doesn't sound right for a full-time position though..

Anyway, it's the first company to offer her an actual contract so she'll be taking it to build up some resume.
