G permit extension taking a long time can I still work?

I am a EU national and registered in Italy. My last G permit expired at the end of December since then I got my contract renewed at the beginning of the year. I applied for a new G permit in the first week of January but still haven't received it. Can I still work? I had a similar issue with an L permit and that took something like 1-2 months but the last G permit took 2 weeks.

Since its a renewal, your permit remains valid because the expiry is considered to be a control period and not the actual expiry of the permit. You may have problems in Italy for tax reasons or if you have to apply for unemployment benefits in the future. But by then, your pass will probably have been renewed.

Considering what was written there was no renewal in good time, the old one ran out (it can not be renewed w/o proof of employment), and a new one is applied for after a new job was secured.

As you are an EU national it might be good enough that you applied for permit G and issuing the physical permit is just a formality (like it is with permit B/L where you have to only register with the commune before taking up work).

I could not find a conclusive answer on the Federal website. Maybe you are more lucky https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...z-eu-efta.html
Also check the Italian/German/French version as the information on the English page might be limited. If still no conclusive answer contact the migration or labor office of your canton (See https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...ntone_und.html) or ask SEM directly.

Yes, it's not a renewal since the old one ran out but a new one. My previous G permit was also for a different country.

Thank you for both your answers, I guess I have to go down and try to sort it out.

Normally as an E.U. citizen, as soon as you have applied for your permit, then you are allowed to start work. This is certainly the case for L & B etc, I canít imagine itís different for G.
