RAV Sanctions

Hello all,

Further to my other post, my spouse had to resign due to an extremely toxic environment at work. Given the extraordinary situation, the decision wasn't taken lightly! If we decide to claim RAV (subject to implications on permit renewal), we understand that they might be sanctioned due to the fact that they voluntarily resigned.

In addition to resigning, they are like to leave their position early. Contractually, my spouse has a 3 months’ notice period but it is likely that they will mutually agree to end employment by the end of June, what is the implication of leaving early? Will there be further sanctions?

Also, what is the impact of the sanctions in calculating work requirement which I believe is 12 months in the previous 2 years?

My spouse has been in employment since September 2017. Their current employment started in November 2019 and between August 2016 (their arrival date) and September 2017, they were unemployed but did not claim any RAV.

Just some quick answers. What ever happens you need to have 3 months evidence of looking for a job. So if they resigned then from the day of the resignation there must be evidence they looked for a job. If they waits until there is a RAV appointment, the RAV will almost certainly tell them to go away until they have 3 months of evidence.

I think you need to have worked 12 months to claim some RAV or 18 months to claim all the RAV. If they have been emplyed since 2017 then there should be no problem.

If you are EU citizen then I think your permit will get renewed even on the RAV. Non EU I have no idea.

As for leaving early. Why would you? The light is at the end of the tunnel, grin and bear it for the time being. There will be no work out there for a bit I suppose, take the month or so extra money and stick it out.

A couple of comments / questions:
  • Evidence - how do you provide evidence in such extraordinary times? For example, how do you evidence phone calls with agents / researching the portals?
  • EU Citizen - this is a bit of a grey area with Brexit. I believe rights are "grandfathered" but who knows what will happen. Luckily, my renewal is up first so hopefully RAV considerations don't come into the picture.
  • Leaving early - it has become impossible for them to continue, the mental and physical well being has been severely impacted. If there was an option to leave immediately then that would be taken up. Even though in the current environment one can not take anything for granted including financial security, health (mental and physical) trumps extra two months of income.

My experience was although although there are the regulations, there is sufficient lee way for your particular RAV person to make life more or less difficult for you, particularly now as the rules are likely to be more fluid due to Corona. I suspect that they will still expect letters, emails or phone calls (they can always phone the number and ask if so and so had enquired about a job) as evidence of looking for work.
It is important to try to build a positive relationship with them - better for your health and maybe better financially.

Just download and complete their standard monthly report. It contains check boxes for each activity. You record the date, the job, the agency and check boxes for sending in resume, conversations with agents etc. And of course keep a copy of the job advertisement or profile. In case they ask you to send it to them later.

Probably need to be careful about how you describe that one... could suggest that perhaps the person is not able to work right now and so would not qualify for benefits in full.

If it is so bad an having an impact on mental health, there is a valid case to see the doc and see if there is a break down, and can you be signed off.

Phone calls and informal meetings, just have to be logged as evidence. Keep a note of who and when, for what role etc, have a few emails printed out that you take to the meeting, a log, be it the official one as suggested downloaded or in excel.

They should be realistic also. So if your an accountant, it may not wash that you applied to be a pilot for example.

As for a Brit renewing permit, as far as I know, there is no problem this year while the transition is on, and there should not be a problem after the transition as you are already here. The main issue will come for those wishing to work in Switzerland in the future.

I am currently registered with RAV.



My advisor told me to use all my contacts/network and to let everyone I know that I am looking for work (good advice!).


And to aim to list 6-8 job leads onto the forms.


However, for April, the forms were deferred to end of May. End of May I need to put in forms for both months.



Currently, they have not been able to arrange any job appointments or assessments (at bare minimum they will send me for a language test as I don't have one)...



Either way, she needs to start looking for work immediately... and any contacts made can be listed. Keep records and the forms will be sent once she signs up with RAV.


For the payment side, I'm still waiting... mine is complicated. I had 5 listed employers in 2019, and have one current part-time contract... plus I resigned in November but was not officially looking for work during November through to March... when I signed up... but I also have 3 depenent kids, and from what I was told, they won't delay paying me because of the kids.. but at this stage, the money is running out fast and I have no idea when I will actually get paid by the insurance.


The insurance are a separate organisation to RAV. The impression I have is that RAV has been able to put systems in place to process things and control the extra load on the staff. The insurance side (the paying organisation) seem to be inundated and slow to respond.
