Au pair combined with other employment

I am close to signing an au pair contract in Vaud, this is my first post here. I hope I comply with all rules on this forum.

Basically, I am an EU citizen and have (almost) gotten myself a great au pair job in Vaud. The employer allows me to other employment beside this au pair job as long as I can fulfil my au pair duties. Additionally, I already have a job in my home country I can do remotely, which is what I intend to do.

I cannot find any laws prohibiting me from having a "side hustle" (citation marks because it will earn me considerably more than the au pair job) but I want to make sure I haven't missed something. I was hoping that someone on here would have experience as an au pair and combining it with another job.

Kind regards,

Typically aupairs pick up weekend babysitting as a 'side hustle'.

I assume your employer is paying correctly - no more than 30 hours of 'work', most of which is when the parent is present in the household, and paying for your language classes ?

Plus your basic pocket money. There are also rules about living conditions as your room must be provided by the family. etc etc etc

Yes, all of this is no problem at all. 25 hours/week, very light workload, language courses and transportation paid for in full, own room and bathroom, weekly pocket money etc. All standard rules are followed.

My only question here is whether I am legally allowed to have a full-blown side hustle as I cannot find any information on it online

Re: Au pair combined with other employment

The way I see, and IANAL, job regulations have been implemented becaue the employees are in the weaker position. In that sense au pair regulations add just an additional layer of protection.

Your question is on self-employment. I have never seen any regulation limiting exploiting oneself, except student residence permits, which limit allowed working hours (to 15 hours per week or something). So, as long as your permit allows, I'd say go for it.

In order to be sure you could contact the Cantonal authorities of Canton Vaud to enquire, and take it from there. I'd expect the "Service d'emploi" to handle this, otherwise they'll forward your enquiry to the responsible body. English should be fine if you don't speak French.

Thank you so much!
