NGO work

Hi all. I'm an American Lawyer in Healthcare (I used to be a Nurse). Would really like to work for NGO in Europe. I don't think WHO or UN would hire me because they usually go for brand named law graduates like Harvard. But I'm sure there's tons of NGOs in Europe. Any advice is appreciated! Please let me know!

Re: NGO work

One thing for sure: you might be surprised who the WHO or the UN would hire!

Working at an NGO in Switzerland usually requires a valid Swiss work permit. Given that you're non-EU, there is a very low chance that they would hire you and sponsor your visa. That's the sad reality here. However, you may try to apply to some INGOs. Depending on your experience, you may have a chance!

No, it doesn't. There's a whole separate category of permits for NGO staff. How easy they are to get I don't know, but I doubt non-EU hiring criteria applies to NGO's.

Re: NGO work

Neither the UN nor the WHO are Non-Governmental Organisations. (Non-Swiss) Employees there are given CDL, carte de légitimation which is similar to a work/residency permit, with some important differences. Management in these organisations often have diplomatic status as well.

Employees at NGOs like IATA and SITA need Swiss Permits and these are managed in Bern from a special quota. I don’t believe there are EU/CH preference rules for hiring on these special permits. Once the permits been issued then normal rules apply.

From my personal experience, non-EU hiring criteria apply to most NGOs.

I am a non-EU working at an IO on a Carte de Légitimation (CdL). When I searched for jobs at NGOs, most of them stated explicitly in the job description that they are only hiring Swiss citizens, EU citizens, or people who already have a valid Swiss work permit (non-CdL). For the ones that didn't have such statement, I still applied, but was told that unfortunately, they couldn't go ahead because of my nationality/ Swiss work permit situation.

I have indeed heard of a special category of permits for NGO staff, and I wonder what kind of NGOs this applies to.

Those that have negotiated a special arrangement with Bern(e). I mentioned two, there are others.
