Switch from permanent role to a 6 month contract - any consequences with RAV?

Hi all,

As some of you know from my comments/posts on the forum, I have been unhappy at my job for quite some time. It is a permanent contract, but the company has consistently been moving all roles to India for some years now. Recently, they cut half of my department and I know that it will inevitably happen for me soon.

Even with the outsourcing, I am unhappy in my job. The company culture and the actual job are not what I want for my life. I am in the final round of interviews for a job that I used to do and very much enjoyed doing. It is a rather niche position, so it isn't easy to find roles in it often. Unfortunately, it is only a contract for 6 months. There is a chance for extension, but they cannot make any promises due to the current situation. I am willing to take the risk of going from a permanent job to a job I enjoy doing in order to get ahead and stop being in this rut I've been stuck in for 2 years now.

Let's say I don't get my contract renewed, would RAV take penalties for leaving a permanent role for a short term contract?

Thanks a lot!

Sometimes hard to predict what the RAV will do, it is sometimes up to personal judgement and not always tied up in rulings.

No idea but I sincerely hope for you that it works out and the contract will be extended! (Know how it is to work in a crappy work environment......)

That's what I worry about. I get some crabby overworked case manager that will be understandably pissed at me for taking a risk.

Re: Switch from permanent role to a 6 month contract - any consequences with RAV?

It's not clear to me your line of thinking, sorry if I misunderstood.

Are you considering quitting your current job, and using RAV as a bridge until the new job would start? If so then you'd probably be subject to a standard penalty for quitting your job.

If you mean you take the new job but after 6 months it ends, I can't see how RAV would care. You've been employed and are paying into the system for at least 2 years, regardless of whether you had a permanent contract originally or not. Besides, you took the new job on good faith that the contract might be extended, it fits your qualifications, etc.

In your shoes, I'd give careful thought to how likely the contract is to be extended - not because of RAV financial penalty but because RAV says you have to take a job that's offered so long as it's up to a certain commute each way. I think it's 2 hours each way? I know you commute a lot now (or did before Covid-19) but I'm not sure how you feel about doing that in the future for a job that may or may not be your cup of tea. Just food for thought.

Iím not sure how much the standard penalty is for quitting your job and going directly to RAV, but if there is anything for your situation, it canít be more than that.

That's what I meant. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

This job is also in Zurich (unfortunately still a commute). Meh...it is hard to make a decision in this climate. Considering it is only for 6 months, they will most likely expect me to come in every day. (And it would be necessary to build the reputation/relationship)

No, however you need to start looking for a new job & fill in the form with10 job applications a month for the last 3 months of the contract.
