Salary comparison/expectation: Cologne vs Basel

Dear All,

I am currently living and working in Cologne, Germany for the past couple of years (have a German passport through naturalization).

I work in the IT sector and have a base annual salary of 100K €. The situation is that my company is offering me an option (will be a new contract) to move to Basel, Switzerland. My company has a setup in Basel as well.

The new job in Basel which I have the option to take is more interesting and has better prospects for growth compared to my current job here in Cologne, Germany. However, a new job from a contractual designation/vertrag stufen point of view is similar to my current job.

Now I know in general from a cost of living point of view that Switzerland is quite expensive compared to let's say Cologne, Germany.

My question is what comparable salary should I expect/demand for this similar job in Basel?

As i stated above, I am currently making 100k in Cologne. If I were to shift to this similar job internally within or other company let's say in Dusseldorf or Cologne 100k - 105k is quite acceptable. Please note, - and in order to avoid confusion - I am not asking or including a raise in this new job, I am only asking a comparable salary for the same job in Basel.

My main concern is not to end up accepting something for this similar position in Basel less than (in relative terms) what i am currently making in Cologne, Germany.

I have a family with 2 kids (5, 8). Wife is a house maker, or in other words, I am only bread winner at the moment. We live in a 3 bed room ground-floor 120 sqm apartment, in a reasonable neighborhood in Cologne. Paying a rent of 1800€ warm per month. We have a family public health insurance and kids go to kindergarten and public school. The younger one will also start his school this year. In short, we have a comfortable family life style without mentioning details about other usual monthly expenses like internet, restaurants, groceries, petrol cost etc.

So in short, what in your opinion would be a comparable salary for Basel to have/demand/expect if not more?

And in addition, what else would you like to advice which I should keep in mind in deciding for this similar position/job in Basel?

Many thanks.

IT is a very broad term. What exactly is it that do you do?

If you are on 100k€ in Germany you would need at least 160k Sfr. here to compensate.

You powerpoint lovers...

Up to 170k is realistic and would also correspond to what you currently earn in DE.

Let me know if you decide to make the move. I'm always happy to help newcomers and avoid them from getting switzerlanded

Sure, will get in touch with you as soon something is materialized. With Covid and all things are pretty time consuming and rough. Also the company I work for is not very efficient in their HR processes.

Re: Salary comparison/expectation: Cologne vs Basel

Seeing this question coming up again and again, I can't recommend Numbeo enough. Here's a comparison of the two cities in question.

What I like about it is that it gives both a single balanced number to look at (I think 4500 euros monthly are about the right net amount from 100k gross yearly) and specific prices so that you can adjust according to your lifestyle. 8000 CHF net monthly correspond to roughly 140-150k base salary per year. Do keep in mind that taxes are different and health insurance is fully private here, to name two of the biggest budget hitters.

And if my assumption was wrong and you're making 100k net in Köln, don't move.
