How to register as a doctor in Switzerland

Hello

I am a Swiss national living and working in the UK as an NHS doctor.

I am hoping to move back to Switzerland and wish to enquire about the process of registering. working as a doctor in Switzerland.

I would highly appreciate any information regarding what I assume will be a long and arduous application process.

Thank you in advance.

Re: How to register as a doctor in Switzerland

The first step would be to get your qualification recognised.

The other important thing is do you speak one of the Swiss national languages at a high level?

Hi Belgianmum & thank you so much for your reply.

I have basic working knowledge of French, but I have not spoken it in over 10 years. I plan on taking courses to remedy this. Is there a specific level I should reach before starting registration process? Are there any courses you would recommend?

Kind regards

Re: How to register as a doctor in Switzerland

I think the minimum required is B2, but ideally you need C1 or even C2, i.e. fluent in the language.

SWissUKGirl,

Just in case you have not yet seen this detailed and informative thread from Drremobond007, he outlines the process here:

Re: How to register as a doctor in Switzerland

Thanks everyone.
Does anyone know if there is an expert in the registration process to hire to guide in the steps?
Would that be a lawyer?

Re: How to register as a doctor in Switzerland

Hi Swissukgirl,
Welcome to the forum. The closest I've ever seen to an expert on this process is, really, Drremobond007, to whose thread meloncollie referred you, in the post above yours. That thread is a masterpiece. It is very long and very detailed, which makes ploughing through it hard work, but it really is the best I've ever seen.

The key things are:
  • Swiss citizenship / EU / non-EU?
You're Swiss, so you are allowed to return to Switzerland and take up residence, immediately.

  • Qualification Swiss / EU / non-EU?
That thread always distinguishes between those, so you can find the applicable instructions for you to get your registration, depending upon where you studied.

  • Language
B2 is the minimum for registration, and not really enough to cope with the everyday work of being a doctor, so that's the place to improve.

  • Paperwork
The steps are all set out in Drremobond007's thread, so I think you're probably unlikely to need a lawyer, nor to be able to find one who specialises in such a task.

I wish you well as you go through the process.

Re: How to register as a doctor in Switzerland

Thank you very much for your kind and informative response @doropfiz.

I expect it will be a long long process (maybe years), so I am getting a bit of a head start. The french will not be an issue as recalling the language easily but I am planning to aim for C2.

I also noticed any contact with mebeko seems to result in copy-paste replies with links that unfortunately do not answer specific questions and then you're stuck chasing your own tail lol!

I will try and make best use of the resources available.

Kind regards
