Disclosing medical condition to work

Hi,

I work in a school in Switzerland. I suffer from stomach problems (I currently suspect Crohns) which affect me most in the mornings. I always have suffered but in the last year it has got worse.

I have intentionally made my timetable so that I don't have to be in until 9.30am most days in case I am having a bad day. The only thing is the staff meetings which I struggle to get in on time for (even if I wake up super early I can still be late due to my stomach) and I need to tell senior management the reason as to why I am sometimes late. I booked a meeting to talk to a member of senior management tomorrow.

In regards to medical confidentiality - how much do I need to disclose? Do I need to tell them everything or just that I have a medical problem that affects me the most in the morning?

Thanks!

Cancel your meeting. Tell them nothing. Go and see your doctor. You health is more important than your career.

Iím sorry I canít give you advice regarding your employer but I do offer you all my sympathies for your medical problems, especially for having to wait for tests. I know, itís awful. Take care of yourself and hang in there. I hope you will have answers soon!

Re: Disclosing medical condition to work

I also had/have a condition where it's sometimes difficult to get into the office early and it is difficult to get people to understand. The 'early birds' sneer when you arrive. There probably would be little confidentiality even if your manager says it will be but you decide how much to say. If people know the reason they might be more sensitive to you. Or they might not. Start with a vague explanation like you suggested, that you're seeking help and explain that it doesn't reflect your attitude to work.

I don't know if it's feasible but could you get up an hour earlier to give yourself a buffer?

I guess you've only just seen a doctor. I coincidentally saw one today and they set up all investigatory tests but I have just crossed into the 50+ group.
While you're waiting you could try a change in diet but you say you've had this condition for a long time already.

Thanks for advice. Last week I woke up at 5am for an early start at 7.30am but my stomach did not want to be my friend so was still last. I am already getting up 1 or more hours earlier but I could try earlier.

I have changed my diet so many times but I am starting to find stuff that agrees abit more.

I hope your tests help you

Re: Disclosing medical condition to work

I would suggest you inform your direct superior (your boss) that you are having medical issues and they are likely to affect your work. Explain that is the reason for your tardiness. There is no need to go into detail other than to say that your are consulting with a Doctor and you will report back once you have more information.

Somebody in your chain of command needs to know.
