How is the job market doing throughout Covid?

Hi all, still employed at the moment, but given the circumstances you never know when that might change suddenly.

I was hoping to hear from people who are job hunting in regards to how the job market is doing in Switzerland amidst the Covid crisis? Is the market totally dead or just slower than usual?

Wishing everyone who's looking the best of luck!

It really depends what you're doing. I can imagine that an IC nurse is in a better situation than a pilot.

So sad, thinking of the pilots I know, but true. Alas, European Security Council just approved the Boeing 737 again! Yay! They can take off again when they have somewhere to land.

As per job market OP, it is slower than usual, in some professions.

Offers declined a lot, many people are looking for jobs, means hard competition
Companys looking only for 2 -3 candiates for round 2 (interviews and final decision) because of the pandamic interviews done over the phone or webcam.

Just received an invitation from a headhunter to apply for a job at one of Basel's monsters. Employers must be desperate

Re: How is the job market doing throughout Covid?

For big banks, telecom, pharma & Coop/Migros, I would say it is going exactly the same (or better). I however foresee more outsourcing in the future, since it is now clear we can work from anywhere and get paid a lot less for it.

Most everything else, a sad time. Wishing all of those who are impacted the very best and please support your local businesses once you can.

Re: How is the job market doing throughout Covid?

The first week of the year saw some movement, but since the announcement of semi lockdown (as the authorities are calling it), it has gone dead now. Have been searching for a while now (background in banking finance) and not looking good. Outsourcing is the future seeing remote working works.

Not great days ahead I am afraid. Considering gong back home as fed and gave up.

These last 12 months have been the worse to look for a work. I have been in CH for 14 years and speak fluent German. I hope others are having more luck.

I can't say about the overall job market but in my company, many software developers switched job in 2020. I expect they found a better job/salary elsewhere.

Only for certain jobs, but not most.

What do you actually do?
I am in IT (not a software dev per se) and are getting pinged by recruiters pretty often these days...

Me too, but the question is if this is an actual job or recruiters desperately trying to make something happen... I remember going for interviews in the financial crisis of 2008 and realizing mid-interview that the job either doesnt exist or for sure wont be filled... the HR departments made a big effort to keep busy so they arent the ones who get cut.

A bit of an art these days to realize when recruiters are full of BS. (Unless you are at a high level.)

If you are working in pharma, recruiters/contracting agencies like CTC are legit.

Re: How is the job market doing throughout Covid?

I am a qualified accountant and worked in one of the big banks for the last 9 years until a year or so ago when I was made redundant.

I agree to other posts that industries like Pharma are recruiting, but they wont look at you if you come from a different industry, even if skills, like finance are easily transferable. I'm afraid that is the sad reality when there are a few people looking for work.

Re: How is the job market doing throughout Covid?

banking is declining as usual, might get accelerated really. It's not like services weren't outsourced and branches closed down before, now with home office it makes no difference anymore even....

Software/IT/electronics/biomedical and related engineering are doing good from what I see and hear.
Except maybe for managers in telco, given that sunrise and UPC are about to open the trapdoor under the seat for the duplicates in their corporate structures.

We are really busy and our team is growing. I'm lucky to be in a very acyclical industry (pharma)

Re: How is the job market doing throughout Covid?

So, I sent 4 applications, got 2 interviews + the others haven't rejected me yet. The market seems not as dead as many say... There are not so many openings advertised, that's true, but my success rate is far higher than it was a couple of years ago.

Not a high-flier, just swiss PhD + a few years work exp here.
