Do teachers/professors have vacations when kids have it?

So, do teachers/professors have vacation when kids have it? In my canton every six weeks kids have 2 weeks vacation. Does that apply to their proffesors/teachers?
Thanks all

Re: Do teachers/professors have vacations when kids have it?

Yes.

The schools close during these periods.

For example, next week is carnevale vacation, kids and teachers are home, schools closed.

In the case of the 11 week summer vacation, teachers start back a few days before the kids.

Re: Do teachers/professors have vacations when kids have it?

If there is no mandatory meeting or training to attend, teachers may go on holiday anytime during that designated period. However tempting it is to assume teachers continually have holidays, the reality is that most teachers work evenings, weekends and parts of their holiday to ensure quality lessons.

You know thatís such bs, FMF. Professors I know work even when school is not in session.

The one in my house is meeting with a student online right now.

Teachers do prep, continuing education.

I know you are cynical about education, but really....I disagree.

Re: Do teachers/professors have vacations when kids have it?

No.
They have - depending on age - 4 to 6 weeks holiday a year. During school holidays they work about 15 hours a week (with this they also compensate working about 50 hours/week during school time), preparing lessons, studying new school-books etc. etc., preparing big exams. In some cantons they have to be present several days before school starts up (for example Basel and as it seems Tessin) There is an article here but it's in German.

OP, where is At Gallen? :-) Typo in your profile.

It's as if other professions don't work longer hours & work over the weekends just don't get the long holidays that teachers get. I have known teachers doing other work during their extended holidays, hence my comments.

Well, on the education part: The teachers in our local schools here seem to have at least two days per year where they all go on some education, and then there is no school. I would have thought they could do this during the holidays.

School teachers, yes. Although they obviously have prep to do in their own time.

Uni lecturers, no. They continue working, doing research etc.

The school I went to in the UK had the staff work 6 weeks over the summer holidays doing 'summer school' where various corses were offered. I guess they had to do some prep for that as well.

I have a few school teachers among my acquaintances. Most of them claim to be one step away from a burn-out. But then this is also true for half of the office people I know.

I guess there is something here where no one feels they can admit that they have an ok life and don't really have to work all that hard. Teacher or not.

You know, in the US, some faculty are paid for a 9 month contract. Often stretched to 12 months so there is something coming in every month. And in Unis, adjunct faculty are paid per course miserly amounts.

So, to your point, teachers in the US often take up summer jobs, other jobs.

Absolutely. My partner works at a university; she was a lecturer until a couple of years ago but has now moved over to the management side. When she was lecturing, pretty much all of the uni holidays were taken up with either writing research papers or attending/presenting at conferences, her actual holidays were two weeks in the summer and one week at Christmas.

Over the last year, her life has basically consisted of trying to calm down irate deans of faculty, half of whom are screaming for all classes and exams to be done remotely, while the other half scream equally loudly for face to face. And lots of weekend work every time the (Belgian) government announces new measures, which they always seem to do late on Friday afternoon...

Not true. There are people who work hard, and like what they do. Itís the suggestion that people only work part time for full time pay. I find annoying because I know itís nonsense.

Not true what? My point is that independent of profession, many people feel the need to claim how ultra busy they are, even if in fact they are not.

Iíd say that depends a lot on the teacher in a school environment, university is a bit different.
The good teachers who are invested in the job certainly donít take such long holidays and put in extra hours on a weekly basis. There are some teachers on the other hand who just do the bare minimum and they probably take as much holiday as they can.

Re: Do teachers/professors have vacations when kids have it?

I think any jobs can be scrutinized, but I wouldn't poke teachers or medical staff too much these days..I am sure I missed some other jobs but ya'll get the idea.

So, OP - some of the time off of students and teachers overlaps, but students have more time off than teachers. Then some cantons have different holidays, so if you teach but your kids are schooled in a different canton, then the time off doesn't have to overlap. Then some of my friends have children in private schools and it doesn't have to overlap either. Or one kid in a private, another in a state school. The combination varies. But I wouldn't automatically assume that when kids are off school, teachers must be off as well.
