| | Do teachers/professors have vacations when kids have it?
So, do teachers/professors have vacation when kids have it? In my canton every six weeks kids have 2 weeks vacation. Does that apply to their proffesors/teachers?
Thanks all

Yes.
The schools close during these periods.
For example, next week is carnevale vacation, kids and teachers are home, schools closed.
In the case of the 11 week summer vacation, teachers start back a few days before the kids.

If there is no mandatory meeting or training to attend, teachers may go on holiday anytime during that designated period. However tempting it is to assume teachers continually have holidays, the reality is that most teachers work evenings, weekends and parts of their holiday to ensure quality lessons.

The one in my house is meeting with a student online right now.
Teachers do prep, continuing education.
I know you are cynical about education, but really....I disagree.

Often stretched to 12 months so there is something coming in every month. And in Unis, adjunct faculty are paid per course miserly amounts.
So, to your point, teachers in the US often take up summer jobs, other jobs.

I know you are cynical about education, but really....I disagree. | | | | | Well, on the education part: The teachers in our local schools here seem to have at least two days per year where they all go on some education, and then there is no school. I would have thought they could do this during the holidays.

I guess they had to do some prep for that as well.

No.
They have - depending on age - 4 to 6 weeks holiday a year. During school holidays they work about 15 hours a week (with this they also compensate working about 50 hours/week during school time), preparing lessons, studying new school-books etc. etc., preparing big exams. In some cantons they have to be present several days before school starts up (for example Basel and as it seems Tessin) There is an article here but it's in German.
OP, where is At Gallen? :-) Typo in your profile.

I admire anyone who can spend the amount of hours trcahers spend with a group of 25 kids and instill in them knowledge, respect, way of life etc.
I could never do it and if I did, I know I would need A LOT of rest to be able to manage this with nerves of steel and not end up shouting at the kids.
Do I envy the long holiday? Heck yeah, wish I had those for my job of course at my same salary.
Do I envy their jobs? Nope. Hence am grateful they do what they do, many many of them so well! But indeed like a previous poster I feel the days for "education of teachers" could be taken during said holidays.... Having an extra 2 days off after 2 weeks holiday does feel a bit like taking the piss | The following 2 users would like to thank kri for this useful post: | |
