Are internship in Biology research field are usually paid ?

Hi,

I'm a Master grade student in biology field (multi-omics), I currently already obtained a M1 in biotechnology but I'm doing an other M1 in the specfic field I mentionned.

I'm about to go to to Bern to work in a reasearch group from the hospital of Bern for a period of 5 months. (cancerology)
My contact, which will be my supervisor do not pay me for the internship. And I have to pay myself for housing, without any grants and any kind of gratification.

I know internship are not a job, but considering I already have 4 years of studies in my speciality and I already have done 2 internships (total = 6 months of experience), that I'm about to have my second M1, is it usual to have 0 salary from such a position ?

I would tend to think it is not normal and this is a case of "cheap" labor.
What should I do in that situation in your opinion ?

Thanks,

Papaya

Internships are rarely paid. Some companies / institutions do sometimes offer a small grant to perhaps cover travel or accommodation costs but it's considered a part of your learning process which of course you can add to your CV which should help you find a job later. In fact if they are happy with you they may even consider offering you a full time position.

Trouble is, if you don't want, or can't afford the internship, there are probably three other people who will jump at it. It's not slave labour, but a way for you to gain practical experience.

I write this as a board member of a university from our experience.

Agree with LuganoPirate: MSc research internships are rarely paid, your payment basically is research experience to build up your CV. When I worked at ETH MSc interns who made a good impression often got offers for PhD positions in the lab or department. You should look for personal funding opportunities in your home country / university. When I did a 6-month research project in Oxford many years ago I secured funding from my home university (an international study fund) and the British council that offered awards for international students at the time. This covered accommodation and travel.

Re: Are internship in Biology research field are usually paid ?

Hello,

The translation of internship is Stagiare (FR) or Praktikant (DE). This positions are lowly paid in Switzerland, albeit still paid:2-3K CHF a month. You won't get rich but it's enough to cover accommodation (a room in a shared apartment), food, transportation and health insurance.

Praktikants at my employer (engineering consulting) right after masters get 2'800 CHF, I see other companies pay lower and others higher. jobs.ch is similar to glassdoor or indeed but local https://www.jobs.ch/fr/salaire/?cant...term=stagiaire

To be honest, I know nothing about hospitals. Maybe not as profitable as Novartis. So a lower income could be expected, but definitively above zero. Interns at Novartis in Basel get 3'000 a month. https://www.glassdoor.fr/salaire/Nov...,13_IM1691.htm

Also, the cultural environment in Switzerland is that the young are independent, the young don't rely on their parents that long.

Just for curiosity you may search for the funding of the person hiring you. If it's a Swiss National Science Foundation sponsored project, the information is open. This is a list of Swiss NSF projects, a short description and the amount of funding http://p3.snf.ch/ Other sources of founding also publish the data for the sake of transparency. I hope it's not the case of a researcher that gets millions in public funding but doesn't want to pay salaries.

PS. last year the "corps intermédiare academique Suisse" complained about precarious contractual conditions. But at least people get paid, take a look https://www.petition-academia.ch/fr/accueil/
