| | Can you be fired on a Saturday or Sunday
I work in an office where my normal working hours are Monday to Friday
I have a doctors note from this Monday to Friday.
My doctor has said she will extend it by a week and then see what to do
Does this new certificate need to start on Saturday or can it start on Monday ?
I do not trust my company or manager to not try and do anything sneaky and if he could fire me on Saturday I would not put it past him

If you have only been sick since Monday, they can't fire you while you are on sick leave.
Saturday will be May 1st anyway so you are covered.
This being said, usually doctors extend certificates, so the new one will probably be from this Sat to the following Friday (or Sat or Sun). It would be weird if you were "able to work on the week-end".

Unless of course you said something like "if you don't agree ... I'll have my doctor write me off sick" and then actually went and did that! (It's not too far fetched, I had a "Zivildienstleistender" try that stunt once. I did not agree and he couldn't pull it through as he said it in the presence of my boss and his military-boss ).
It could possibly convince them, you're not the best employee to have and release you asap - yet not while you're ill.
Otherwise I see no reason but yes, of course you can be fired on a week-end if they get the letter to you. It also all depends on whether you have a regular job with resignation date end of month, whether you still are on probation etc. etc.
The follow-up doctor's certificate should go from Saturday to next Friday. As he won't declare you healthy to go out partying and then sick again on Monday.

Of course you can be fired on a weekend, or any day of the year. The effectiveness will depend on the circumstances.

It may be more helpful to continue from your - if I may say so, equally bizarre - previous thread on medical sick notes. If your job is putting you in this much of a tizzy, maybe start looking for somewhere that doesn't cause you this much anxiety? Getting sick often is a common symptom of stress.

In Switzerland, being on sick leave does not prevent an employer from exercising their right to signal their intention to terminate employment. It just makes it a bit more difficult to do so.
It does affect the end date of employment, which is extended by the period of sick leave, up to maximum of the protected period.
Optically, being terminated during sick leave is a different issue.

If it had been given prior to the sick leave, then the notice period is extended.

Nor is there anything in the link you shared that contradicts what I wrote.

OP, what’s the outlook here for you? If you have such a tough relationship with your employer, do you foresee yourself ever coming back from your sick leave? If not, time to make a plan.
Have you been in your role long enough to collect RAV? If so, let them fire you if it is so unhealthy for you. Don’t stay somewhere that makes you ill, take care.

I was hoping to get advice on the legal aspects on whether you can be terminated on a weekend.
My outlook is to hopefully recover and come back as soon as I can but that might take a little more time and I don’t know if my manager will give me that protection

Poppy,
If the place you work is so bad that your manager would ask HR to conspire to fire you on a weekend, let them do so.
You can then take them to court for unfair dismissal and get some compensation potentially, although I fear these things can drag on for years!
If you've been employed for at least 12 months in the last 2 years, doesn't have to be continuous or the same employer or even the same country [although I think it needs to be EU] than you can claim chomage which will be 70% of the average salary you have been earning in that time.
The time you can claim chomage for is linked to your status, you get longer to find a job if you have kids [and slightly more chomage too]. They give you at least a year I think.
You can be sick for up to six months before your employer can legally terminate your job.
All that said, if you go back the week after next they can fire you the day you return, they simply have to make sure they give you the notice required.
As others have said, if the place the work is that toxic its making you sick, than it would be a good thing to leave, once you burn yourself out if can take a long while to come back, believe me I'v been there.

You can also be fired on day 1 after returning to work.

Can't you find a doctor to extend your sick leave? Since your note expires on a Friday, have them start it again on Saturday. It can retrospectively be submitted on Monday. Walk in clinics are open on the weekend if you aren't able to reach your current doctor.
I wouldn't worry too much about the days of the week & instead focus on why you are sick. Take care!
