Visiting home country when working in Switzerland

Hi,

I am currently finishing a PhD thesis in biomedical research and I am interested in jobs in pharma industry in Switzerland as a future career possibility. I would like to here comments and experiences on visiting home country (within Europe) when working in Switzerland.

How does the Swiss working culture consider visiting your home country frequently (1 or 2 times in a month)? Is it common to get longer visits to back home by doing a longer workday, i.e. working 1 or few extra hours daily to get extra 1-2 days free every 2nd week? How common it is to get travels to home paid by the employer at the level I would be propably working? Is it common to be allowed to work remotely, for e.g. while traveling to home?

Obviously this will vary from employer to employer. I have colleagues who disappear for 3 or 4 weeks at a time having 'saved up' overtime and taken days in lieu of pay.

Getting paid to travel though - about no chance would be my guess.

Re: Visiting home country when working in Switzerland

Most Swiss employers have flexi-time schemes to accumulate and use up excess working hours. Much depends on the company culture. Those who are frequently away are sometimes stigmatized as frivolous.

However, R&D departments usually have a more relaxed attitude, because they have no customer contact. Obviously, a shop assistant must be present when the shop is open. But creative professions need flexibility.

Re: Visiting home country when working in Switzerland

It varies - I know some people who essentially live in the UK and only come to Switzerland to work - fly in on a Sunday night/Monday morning and fly out on Friday night every week. Most (I haven't heard of one that doesn't) pharma companies offer flexi time so you can work pretty much what hours you want and taking long weekends with saved time seems to be quite common.

I don't know of anyone who has got regular return travel included with their package other than normal relocation and an orientation/flat hunting weekend in advance so at entry level I would forget it - though within Europe as budget flights are so cheap to many desinations would it be worth it?
