We have a min of 3 days in the office and its free choice, but if they see that too many are taking Mon and Fri as their home days they will step in.
What sector?

Btw, heard that joke that Amazon / Goldman / [insert any sweat shop] are introducing 2 mandatory wfh days - Sat and Sun.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

My employer will test weekly, gives free masks and allows me to choose. I have not worked in the office since the first week of March 2020....

Apparently if you go to the office there is a mask obligation even at the desk. While I don't care about this really, given the choice, my work/life balance is much better with WFH.

Post-COVID I will work up to 20% in the office; I was working 60% in the office before so it's no great shakes - but my management structure up to the top now understands most people will work properly from home - sad that they had to be forced to learn that!!

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

I've been going back to the office even though I don't need to. It's not that I want to talk to anybody, since I just stay in my office with the door closed. I just want a change of scenery, free coffee and air conditioning.

It was a bit of a surprise to me as I'd expected to work 100% from home given the chance. But it really is a bit depressing to stay the whole week around the same 4 walls and hardly moving (at work, I have to walk a minute just to get to the toilets).

Couldn't agree with this more! If you'd asked me two years ago if I'd like to WFH permanently, I would have shouted 'YES!'.

Now it's a whole different story, my apartment has become my cave.

Same. And it will get worse when the kids are out of school for the summer.

We are provided a mask when we come in (only need to wear it when not seated at our desk), but currently we are still on mandatory WFH unless business vital. We are not testing, despite being a big company (insurance). There is no pressure from anyone to come to the office. I was there yesterday for a change of scenery and maybe 10% of people were there.

The announcement last fall, prior to the second wave, was that we would target 30% home office averaged over all employees. We will also move to desk sharing in the next couple of years. I think my company has embraced WFH and we will be allowed much more flexibility than two years ago.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

Trick question?

I'm the only person from my work who stayed home during the mandatory work from home mandate. Everyone else went in and just worked as normal. Then I was guilted for staying home once I started going back in after the work from home mandate was loosened to recommendation.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

I think there are some harder to detect effects too. There was an initial boost to productivity as everybody went crazy and worked the whole time since they had extra time from saved commute and nothing else to do. It calmed down after a couple of weeks.

Now, I see that it is having an adverse mental health effect too. A significant proportion of our team have burned out in the last year and gone on medical leave or quit. Myself, I got quite burned out and was close to quitting in the last weeks.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

I can understand people who hate wearing masks at work, I do too. But please spare a thought for colleagues who are uncomfortable being around people who don’t wear masks but are pressured to be in the office.

I have a friend who works for a small company where the bosses seem to take increasingly liberal views about mask wearing, to the point that when he complained, he was uninvited to meetings and events. At first he thought they were just being kind to excuse him from group meetings, but slowly they have also taken away some of his responsibilities “because he can’t come to workshops” and some people made comments about him being such a pussy. It’s the kind of small company where everyone does everything together. He is in a position that he is expected to do a job but cannot anymore and is thus researching the appropriate next steps, HR and legal wise. Sounds like mobbing to me, and possibly some legal issue as the company is failing to follow BAG rules, but all can be avoided if his colleagues are a bit more considerate.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

I have blocked the times in my calendar before 0900 and after 1700 because it was becoming a joke. But then again, I am not home alone and I have input to remind me that I don't need to be working more hours just because I am not commuting.

If I was on my own, I would be working from somewhere else entirely, probably a month here and a month there in some sunny place I did price up what a month might cost, out of interest, and it was less than I'd pay on rent and for shopping

So my advice to anyone single, try that... it's not badly-priced

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

I enjoy WFH, but I'm part of a long established and very friendly global team anyway, so workwise it's easy.
What I miss is the 'free' exercise of getting to work, the activity of climbing the stairs, walking around etc, the heightened senses ( feeling active rather than feeling lazy), and mostly of personally meeting 50 or so different people every day.
All I do now during the day is sit in front of the screen and walk a few meters to the kitchen etc.
It's definitely had a detrimental affect on my physical health.
As soon as the masks at the desk rule is removed I'm going back 40%.

In case you missed it,

"Working from home compulsory: Working from home is compulsory in all areas where it is possible to work from home without disproportionate effort."

"Travail à domicile obligatoire : le travail à domicile est obligatoire partout où il est possible de travailler à la maison sans effort disproportionné."

This was only lifted may 31st. I would say compulsory and obligatoire are pretty strong, of course people used the loophole of without disproportionate effort, to just not listen to the government mandate. But these people just came in to sit at their desk and work (about 80% of the time). 20% of the time the didn't come in because in reality they could easily do the same thing from home. No one took the pandemic seriously here.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

Not going back to the office. I think it a bit of luck that I work in place where it was common than half of people were not regularly at our office because they were working at the customer office or construction site. So, not seeing colleagues for extended periods of time was already normal.

We have met a couple times for beers after the relaxation of measures and it has been great. I'm happy to talk with them instead of seeing a meatbag walking towards my office and start thinking What else needs fixing? I have my own damned projects, don't have time for this..

I delude myself and have fun thinking I'm a professional in the 17th century. There are no no cars and no trains. What else an engineer could be besides working from home or the construction site? Just like today. Since I don't like construction sites, been there done that, I better enjoy home

What it curious to me is that the people (in my job) that kept going to the office during the restrictions are the ones who never stayed for the happy hour. If I ever go to the office it will just be for the happy hour and take office supplies.

Well, as I cannot work at home, there was no mandate as far as I am concerned.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

Been in office for about 4 times in last 6 months, Was also worried about wearing masks at desk, as it turned out it was not really bad after switching to good quality cloth masks.

Will go office more regularly after 2nd dose, Before corona I used to feel that I get more done when working from home, now I felt I can get more done at office, specially as you can just talk to your colleagues and get things done instead of another scheduled video call.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

I've spoken with a number of colleagues who are already starting to look around for companies offering 'full flexibility'. After 1.5 yr WFH, the penny has dropped for many that 2-3 hr daily commutes or being in noisy open plans is not necessary and is actually making them miserable. Some are even prepared to take a cut in pay to hold on to that precious privilege.

Personally I am worried about the longer term consequences of all this. Its naive to think that companies won't consider swapping Swiss jobs for those in lower cost countries. Even if they have to fly people in for the odd meeting, it would still be cheaper. Anyone in HR who is party to these discussions... please let us know

Anyway.... yeah, be careful what you wish for.

It will be difficult for companies if they expect 100% attendance in office , key for them would be to offer a balance with 40-60% WFH

Another aspect will be company culture, if everyone is working from home then I feel it is difficult to build a team or company culture , specially as existing ones leave and new ones work from home.
