I've spoken with a number of colleagues who are already starting to look around for companies offering 'full flexibility'. After 1.5 yr WFH, the penny has dropped for many that 2-3 hr daily commutes or being in noisy open plans is not necessary and is actually making them miserable. Some are even prepared to take a cut in pay to hold on to that precious privilege.

Personally I am worried about the longer term consequences of all this. Its naive to think that companies won't consider swapping Swiss jobs for those in lower cost countries. Even if they have to fly people in for the odd meeting, it would still be cheaper. Anyone in HR who is party to these discussions... please let us know

Anyway.... yeah, be careful what you wish for.
Exactly, and that's why all I am hoping for is a good 3:2 or 2:3 day mix withoit fixed days. That would be great and possibly combine the best of both worlds.

No interest in WFH becoming "working from Hyderabad" as someone here put it.

For us it would be nearshore outsourcing to Eastern and central Europe. Similar time zones, easy to fly in and good quality graduates who are fluent in English and familiar with the EU structure and institutions.

Well, as I cannot work at home, there was no mandate as far as I am concerned.

Tom
OK everyone, close the thread, discussion finito.
If Tom doesn't have to do it, it never existed!

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

At work they are only reviewing the WFH policy as too many candidates declined (we currently can WFH 12 days a year.....).

Apparently it could be up to 40%, but then your supervisor needs to approve, who - in my case - will find a reason to get all the "sheep" back into the office............

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

OH was told 2 weeks ago they can start returning to the office from July 1st. He's in a very small team and plans to go back to 3 days office, 2 WFH which he was doing before covid. He met up with colleagues yesterday for lunch and some of them said they couldn't take another 3 - 6 months of WFH as they don't have the right setup (2 are working from basement rooms in their houses with no windows).

I guess we're lucky as our spare room is big and was set up like a studio room with a sofabed for visitors before the pandemic. The other 3 room apartments in our building are occupied by people with kids and they've had to put a desk in their kids room so one parent can work from there whilst the child is at Kindergarten whilst the other parent is working from the dining room table. I don't see how that's good in the long run tbh.

One couple in a 2 room apartment split up as they couldn't cope with both of them working from the dining room table. The guy is still there and told me he hasn't been to his office since all this started and it's starting to drive him round the bend.

We ran a business from home in Scotland for about 8 years, but again a spare room was allocated to office space. This time round I'm a (reluctant lol) Hausfrau and I've made it my job to see OH eats healthily and is supported at times when things have been a bit stressful.

We have a min of 3 days in the office and its free choice, but if they see that too many are taking Mon and Fri as their home days they will step in.
I've heard that other firms as well -- reminds me of the old Dilbert comic where the pointy-haired boss was upset when told that 40% of sick days were taken by his staff on Mondays and Fridays. :-)

So, how specialized the job is? I'm sure there are some generic skills jobs and some things that needs an unique skill set.
