Return to Office - Corona Measures

Dear EFers,

There are rumblings from my employer that they are looking in to some kind of hybrid in-office / home working setup as the numbers of vaccinated are increasing.

Dividing the team into groups "A" and "B", one week group "A" would work at home while group "B" work in the office; the following week "B" home, "A" office and so on. Thus making sure people can sit spaced apart etc.

They did this last summer when the new infections had gone down after the initial wave - and it was quickly knocked on the head as the new infections started to increase again.

My only issue, if we have to go back in the office is we will likely have to wear a mask even while sitting at a desk, not just when moving around. I have no issue at all with wearing a mask for short periods such as at the shops, on public transport etc, but to sit for 3-4 hours at a stretch in a stuffy office will be a bit much. I'll be happy to go back once the mask requirement is lifted.

I wonder what other peoples' employers are doing / considering?

Cheers,
Nick

Barbarians!

Who's paying for the masks?

I only wear a mask when I go shopping, like today at lunch at Denner.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

Ours are still waiting with the notification.... But at any meeting/call it is: oh we are so happy to see you all back here soon!

Nothing on the mandatory testing so far but as the current WFH regulation at work runs out per 30.06, I do not expect anything before that......

I really really am not looking forward to being in the office all the time, with some people who couldn´t be bothered to wear masks when it was mandatory or some people who refuse to get vaccinated etc etc

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

We have to wear masks in the office full time. Compliance is about 50% and trending downwards.

Theres a testing program in place, and home office is still an option, although management is not actively endorsing it.

We have to supply our own masks as well. Currently for me it's a mask for the day, go to gym, dump mask afterwards.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

we don't have to use masks when we sit at desks, only when we are walking around the office.

companies may jhave to test staff everyday before coming to the office, this is a proposal which is being considered but this is costly and time inefficient

what will be interesting is if you have teams of vaccinated and non vaccinated staff - how will that work? will vaccinated staff have to wear masks for the non vaccinated?

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

We did only 1 and half month home office between March and April last year, the rest of the time our boss made us come to the office.
Luckily our desk are quite spaced apart, we can sit with no mask, but as soon as we walk around or have a meeting, we need to wear.
I personally wear it most of the time, no issue with that. The company pays for them + desinfektionsmittel

Once I've used a mask in the gym I'm halfway to waterboarding myself. It then has a lovely musty smell to it if I let it dry out.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

I am sensing a coordinated rollout globally to push for a return from home office and precisely in waves

The x-factor outside of the usual arguments for/against will be obviously how the delta variant spreads & potential implications for CH

Presumably, however, even in the near term I cannot envision <40% WFH but it does feel that 100% days are coming to an end

Mask when not sat at desk, in our case. A quite stupid rule in an open space office, but then as you say who wants to wear a mask all the time?

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

More to the point, last year they did this hybrid setup, and the people I work most closely with were in the other half - i.e. at home when I was at the office, so we had to communicate via chat / phone anyway.

I'm not a big fan of this model, from a productivity perspective. My office in the UK tried this last year, a red team and a blue team alternated attendance at the office. Inevitably some of the red staff are desperate for in-person meetings with the blue staff, yet they never cross paths. I would prefer the concept of selecting specific days of the week, and coordinating with your teams on an agreement basis.

I am honestly hoping we never return to a full 5-day in-the-office arrangement. If I could do 2-3 days in office and the rest at home on a permanent basis, I'd be thrilled.

My company are doing a big discussion next week on the future of working; I'll know more for you then.

In [insert name] big pharma in Basel there are some rumblings from upper management to go back but almost everyone (including me) is saying 'when I don't have to wear a mask'.

I doubt they'll put too much pressure on us until we're maskless.

In some cantons, you have to. I am certainly not going into the office when it is 30°C to wear a mask.

In any case, in my view it is ridiculous to force people back to the office now. Let them get vaccinated and have their summer breaks, then come back in some form after the summer.

Re: Return to Office - Corona Measures

The mandatory WFH rule was withdrawn with effect 31 May.

It's now a recommended WFH, with staff permitted to return to the office if the employer has a weekly testing regime. The testing regime must be registered with the cantonal doctor.

Staff who received their 2nd vaccine more than two weeks previously, or single dose (if they've previously recovered from Covid) are exempt from the testing requirement.

The weekly test can be a rapid antigen. Employer pays. We've outsourced ours to a local pharmacy and invited staff to return to the office for a day a week throughout the summer, with a hybrid (3 days a week) model taking effect from September.

The Federal council are currently consulting on the plan to withdraw, from 28 June, the need to wear masks at the office.
