Offer of redundancy at 11th hour - can I stay?

Hi forum,
My company has been going though a restructure, and a few months ago I was offered either a redundancy package or a move back to the UK with a job. I took the relocation with job at the time, but for various reasons this week I asked if it would be possible to instead opt for the redundancy and stay in Switzerland to look for a new job here. The answer was yes. However, I handed my notice in on my apartment and am due to leave at the end of the month. So, a) how feasible is getting a new rental lease without an employment contract? And b) is there a set amount of savings / redundancy payout Id need to burn through before being eligible to get chomage? I have two days to make my decision so a lot of research to do! Thanks in advance!

Well unless who you will rent from asks for a reference you still have a job for a while, you still have the original contract and proof of income in bank statements.
For unemployment there will be the usual waiting period which can be up to one month plus I would imagine the same duration of your notice period, assuming that the company in fact gave you notice and that you haven't yet been looking for work.
I assume if you got your permit before Brexit that you can stay but of course if you leave for the UK it will be harder to come back.

Good luck. Can be difficult deciding where to be.

Re: Offer of redundancy at 11th hour - can I stay?

You need to sign on to RAV asap as there may be a longer period since it's a redundancy before you start getting paid. And start applying for jobs of course.

Not having a job is going to make it harder to find somewhere else to rent; landlords/agencies are going to want to know you can afford to pay the rent and with others to choose from who do have jobs who do you think is going to be preferred?

Re: Offer of redundancy at 11th hour - can I stay?

Is there such a thing as "redundancy" which affects your RAV payments?

My understanding / assumption was that you either leave your job by your own choice -> RAV waiting period, or not by your own choice -> no RAV waiting period.

If the company chooses to make some sort of payment to people who are leaving to maintain morale etc, and to encourage some people to indicate they are open to the option, that is (probably) not relevant to RAV as the company still makes the decision.

Wait, you still get unemployment benefits/support if it's you who quits?
News to me!

Yes you do. Only there is a longer waiting period if you resigned yourself.

Seems to me that an employee cannot be forced to relocate outside of Switzerland or even within Switzerland requiring a commute of over 2 hours. Therefore, would think that RAV is obliged to support and fulfill the alternative. In addition, believe that the payout will also have no influence on when unemployment will officially begin.

I was made redundant twice and I never encountered such a bar.

My cousin has worked for a Swiss group in US/France/Japan & in CH over the previous 35 years. He was made redundant & received a big payout, that has meant his RAV rahmenfrist is delayed for a very long time.
Not sure what the payment was however I think it was in excess of the 120k min survival salary for expats.

Re: Offer of redundancy at 11th hour - can I stay?

When it happened to me in 2015, the amount was 150k I think. Anything above that and you would have a longer period before you get any RAV money.

Depends on how much you earn, and if you have kids.

I got 20 days.

120k is peanuts by the standards of your Cousins!

I guess his salary was multiples of that, since IT rates have dropped over 20 years it was better to let him go early. He did say at meetings people would proudly introduce themselves saying they had worked for the group for 1 / 3 / 5 & very occasionally 10 years..........
