Tips for changing job inside same company

Hi,
for those that changed job while staying inside the same company...how did you approach your boss? Did you approach them before applying for the internal position, or only once you had an offer from the next team?

It's easier to interview and jump ship when the ship is another company...but when you are staying in the same company, in my opinion there's a lot more politics and nonsense involved during the interview process, because you don't want to burn the bridge that you currently stand on.

If you have a good relationship with your boss it is courteous to tell them that you have applied for another role and they can then support you.

If you do not have a good relationship with your boss and/or are worried that they would react negatively then don't tell them and explain this to the hiring manager.

It also depends on the size of the company and the culture there. It's your call.

In my view, it's best to be transparent with all parties. Inevitably, someone will spill the beans anyway if you try to keep it secret - either HR or someone from the team you are attempting to join. Assistants see emails, people can look in calendars and there's a decent chance someone in the new team knows people in your current team. If you're in a critical role, I think HR has to tell your current boss.

Re: Tips for changing job inside same company

The way I know it, usually I would contact my line manager and discuss intentions to change the position within the company and ask him for support. Normally, they want staff to develop themselves and change jobs with age and personal goals in mind. That’s why they have those KPA’s and promotions are also known of. In my case, I wanted to try something new and my team leader supported me to do a job rotation in another department to get some hands on experience. That’s a perfect transition into another position within the same company. Importantly, do not do it out of desperation to leave the department. In this case, it’s better to take holidays or few days off to get the head straight. Only approach it in a balanced way and when there is an opportunity available. Do not burn bridges behind adage always applies, especially in a small place like Switzerland.
