Offices that accept dogs?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to put together a list of example companies where staff can take their dogs to work. I know that Nestlť introduced a pets policy in 2016, and they had really good results according to a review done in 2019. Does anyone have any other examples please, and any details of what measures they have in place?

I want to propose to my company that they allow staff to bring pets to work, so this is part of my initial research. Are there other questions I should be looking into? I already have someone checking the office building regulations to see if there is any reference to dogs/pets.

Many thanks!

I would check first if there is anybody in the company that is allergic to dogs, is afraid of dogs or simply doesn't like dogs.

There is a huge amount of UK/US research on the positive effect dogs at work have on mental health, but I completely get the allergy/afraid of dogs part.

This, exactly. Not only for those people - and their continued ability to work in peace - but also for the sake of the dogs, as they won't be feeling comfortable if they're having to stay in an environment where someone is tense on account of their being there.

Thank you. Swiss employers have a responsibility to ensure that their employees' working environment is safe and conducive to being able to do the work. This includes such aspects as accident prevention, care about noxious chemicals, making the right information available, keeping the equipment/tools in good working order, and diminishing distractions. Swiss employees, too, have a responsibility not to do anything that would impair themselves or anyone else from doing their job properly, and safely.

Over the years, I've known, for example, of four separate cases (two in offices, one on a building-site and one in a cleaning team) in which a colleague had a radio playing, and was told to switch it off (or use headphones) as soon as it became apparent that the music/talking was distracting another employee. This kind of consideration for the others in the working space is so normal that, in each case, the radio-playing person immediately accepted the instruction, apologised for having disturbed anyone, and switched off the radio.

Our US offices have a pets policy and its an awful work environment as a result.

Could you please set out which aspects make it awful? Thanks. What does the pets policy allow people to do... which pets can they bring along? Is there no recourse for the non-pet people?

Something like: the cat of Nancy from accounting and the dog of Bob from sales have a fight. Make sure you never accept an HR role in a company that allows pets

The article that I read on Nestlť said that they had to have a behavioural test certificate - the dogs, not the owners, although maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing......

With eco commute on the rise, a stables with horse boarding for mounted commuters could be considered an interesting work benefit instead of a 3rd world necessity...

I am not a dog person and really resent the fact that dog owners are constantly trying to insist that their own particular dog is adorable and that I should love it as well. I would be horrified at the thought of dogs being permitted at my workplace. What a bizarre idea.

I heard Procter and Gamble's pet food division allowed this. However this is based on the echos I have from over a dozen years now, it may no longer be the case for the Geneva office.

Ditto on this, I do not want dogs in the general workplace and think it's a terrible idea. Realistic scenarios:
  • Dogs barking and/or arguing/fighting
  • Dogs making a mess whether accidental or otherwise
  • People with allergies to dog fur being made miserable
  • People with dislike and/or fears of dogs being made miserable
  • People spending excessive time petting and/or getting distracted by dogs

I'd rather a company contribute towards dogwalker or dogsitter costs 2-3x a week.

So I think this is the important point. Nestle Petcare is a company around pets. So if you want to work there and they say "we allow pets in the office" it shouldn't be such a surprise. If you work at RedBull, they have redbull in the office. If you hate redbull and are disgusted by the drink, probably don't work at redbull.

What I mean is trying to introduce a pet policy at a company which doesn't have a direct association with pets will be a much steeper ask than trying to get a company which is already a pet company to do the same. If I worked for Poodles R Us, and they told me they were bringing in a pets-in-the-office policy, I wouldn't really think I would have many grounds to complain.
