How should I prep for IT job search in Zurich?

Hello,

We may be moving to Zurich in 4 to 6 months for my husband's job. I'm working currently and would like to continue to do so, and have an EU passport which will allow me to.

Any ideas of what I could/should do at this point to make it easier to find a job when (if) we get to Zurich?

I'm a senior SQL database developer, and have worked the past 11 years on a contract basis.

Also - I would truly appreciate any ideas on what rates are like in Zurich. I've heard about the cost of living being sky-high, I hope the rates are as well!

thanks for any advice
Sylvia

Rates CHF 900-950 per day.

I may be able to help if your focus is MS SQL...

If possible, get a letter describing your current job's responsibilities and how long you've worked at it. Write it up yourself and get your boss to sign it. Search the forum for Zeugnis for more information.

I didn't have any such thing as I worked for the defense contractor in your area, and it made it very difficult for me to find work here.

Goto the websites of the comanies you want to work for and look on thier Career website. i.e. the following companies are ususally looking for this type of employee:

UBS, Credit Swiss, SwissRe, Swiss Life, Zurich Insurance, GE Finance, CitiBank.

Register with a couple of agencies (try and stick with Local Swiss agencies or at least one's with offices and staff here):

Harvey Nash
Swisslinx
di-visions

Look at Job Websites: jobserve.co.uk

Re: How should I prep for IT job search in Zurich?

Thanks everyone - sounds like I definately need to do the Zeugnis thing, I'll look it up. Thanks for all the other suggestions, too.

Another thing - in Swiss IT jobs, is the dress code pretty much the way it is out here (i.e. wear what you want) or do you have to wear business casual or something? I imagine that working at banks may be a little different.

thanks,
Sylvia

Depends on the company, position and dept, but generally there is no dress code (for IT developers and the like), unless you are client facing. But smart casual would be adviced at least to start with till you know the boundaries.

Suit and boot for the interview and the first day.
Then decide if you wear flip flops...

Yes for the interview, first impressions matter.

I've seen some people come into work in scruffy shorts/t-shirt and sandles in IT areas within a bank.

In the end wear what you fill comfortable and that will fit in. Mind you sometimes it's nice to be a bit smarter
