I got an"job" offer

Hi everyone,
I am from Brazil, with German B1 and I already work as a video editor freelancer in Switzerland and I finally got an interview after a year in here, for a 80% job. So everything was good but at the end of the process (Interview, two assignments, other interview) they offered me an internship. So now what I should do? I thought was weird that they offered me an internship in the end...

Thank you

Re: I got an"job" offer

Do you have significant professional experience (more than an intern)? Are they paying you a liveable salary with permit/visa sponsorship?

In addition to the below questions - If they were not clear that this was an internship from the beginning, or haven't given a reason as to why they offered you that instead of an official role, I would say that is a red flag.

You have provided so little useful information in your post that it's almost impossible to answer you. To start with what is your age, education, working experience and residence permit?

Re: I got an"job" offer

Yes, I work as an editor for 5 years and they saw my work and they knew my background and german level, they did not make a specific salary offer, was kind off...because it was supposed to be the "job offer and money discussion interview" .It was clear from the begging that it was a job vacancy.

What position did you actually interview for, is it also an editor? What are your initial thoughts about being offered an internship and did you speak to them further to ask whey they have offered you that and what your expectations were?

Editor, well I already did an internship that ended last week and they knew that. And now I am applying for jobs, but it is no because of the internship in general, it is because they said that only in the last interview that they wanted to give me an internship instead of the actual job.

To be honest, B1 isn't considered a great German level for a German speaking environment and your English is lacking too.

If they offered you an internship, perhaps that is where they think your skill level is. Up to you if you decided to take it or you can keep looking ... not much other advice we can give you other than good luck!

In that case you appear to have have two choices: 1) either continue to freelance and turn down the job, or 2) take the internship.

Only you can answer which is worth it to you as we don't know your situation. However, to apply for a job and and be offered an internship seems like a step back and I doubt they pay much. Go back to them and negotiate and say you applied for a full job and want the full job.

I don't think your English language abilities are a problem, your level of written English really seems acceptable, so I have no idea what Susie-Q means by that particular comment.

Well, I see this differently: perennial internships are a thing in the media industry- simply put: there isn’t as much money in media as there used to be. So companies cut cost… including unfair things like that one.

Long story short: ask them why a person with five years experience would need to do an internship. Request a proper work contract. Can be part time, but at a professional rate for x% of your time. Fun fact: if it’s part time, make it clear that you will only work on those days and not accept a simple pay cut through the back door. If they are not willing to offer you a half-decent living wage… walk away.

Im not one of the people on her who claims that everyone earns 200k, but interns make less than a supermarket cashier and that’s simply not a mid term solution. I did an internship after college as a stop gap measure for six months and that’s ok, but not in the OPs situation- they are clearly trying to take advantage of him.

Agreed. Apart from a predictive text glitch, the OP's written English seems fine to me. Let's not add to his/her concerns! As for the job, it sounds to me as if the employer is being underhand here. An internship should be clearly described as such from the very start. It has a specific function, to be part of a training process, and shouldn’t be offered to someone with 5 years' experience. To spring it on an applicant at the end of the recruitment process sounds very much like them trying to cut costs. I would politely insist on a proper contract, and walk away if not offered.

Re: I got an"job" offer

I worked for a small company that did this regularly: they hired a steady stream of "interns" who were continuously replaced by new ones once their "internship" was finished. It was a ruse to exploit cheap employees who were easily terminated.

I would only take the job if you think this would give you a better platform to find a new one (as opposed to not having anything). It's always easier to find a new job when you have a job. You can leave the "internship" part out of your CV. You can tell new potential employers that due to being currently employed there, you cannot provide a reference (as they don't know you're looking).
