Salary as an apprentice

Hello there!

I'm looking to be an apprentice as a motorcycle mechanic, and I've found a place I think.

But what are the salaries like?

They said 600fr. per month the first year, and then 1200 fr.

But no one can live of that. Anyone?

Re: Salary as an apprentice

Normally apprentices here are kids still living at home and and even they run out or money before the end of the month.

Re: Salary as an apprentice

Yes, the apprenticeship starts at age 15, 16. Here are some salary recommendations from the professional associations of the German speaking part of the country:

Canton Aargau, 2007
:
1st year: 500
2nd year: 700
3rd year: 900
4th year: 1100
Starting salary: 3600-3800

Canton Zurich, 2007:
1st year: 550
2nd year: 650
3rd year: 750
4th year: 950

As an adult you can probably aim higher but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure you can actually start an apprenticeship as an adult, as I think it comes with a federal certification (CFC in French, don't know the equivalent in German), and I remember reading that there's an age cutoff past which you cannot enrol any longer.

Re: Salary as an apprentice

I am originally from Denmark, my education will be Danish, only the practival periods will be taken in switzerland.

But it's a hard blow, with the salary. So how does an older person get education in Switzerland?

Re: Salary as an apprentice

I don't know the Swiss system is somewhat backwards to me, as an American(the land of start us and people who made it without a formal education... yes I'm proud to be an American). I'm studying with the open U, but for your profession I have no idea what other options might be...
