Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

Hi,

I arrived in Bern 6 months back and have been looking for a job since then. Unfortunately I have not had any success till now. I am from the financial service industry. I have tried websites like job.ch, efinancialcareers.ch, linkedin etc. I also contacted recruitment consultants here but once they know that I do not know german they are unwilling to even give me an appointment to meet. It is really difficult for me to just be at home after having pursued a professional career for many years. I am keen to work in Bern itself. I would really appreciate if I could get some help/advice on the matter.

Thanks

If you have IT skills that would be a better area to look for English speaking jobs. As far as health care goes, what do you mean by that? Nursing, etc? Without fluency in written and spoken German and/or French you simply won't be hired. Qualifications would need to be approved/recognised by the Swiss Red Cross as well. Insurance, again not that much call for English as it's not one of Switzerland' official languages.

Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

I don't know what agencies are in Zurich, maybe there's an Adecco there. Or try these two websites:

www.jobs.ch
www.jobup.ch

They may give you some agency names which you could then follow up on. Or even some jobs.

Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

I have 10 plus years experience in web development, I currently work for a Financial company here in London on the dealing platform.

Is there a technology hub in Switzerland similar to Silicon Valley in the US?

Also where is the main financial sector?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

I live in Bern three years by now and I couldn't find job until today. I come from eastern Europe country where I finished University studies and gained 10 years of finance, banking experience. I also learned German so I could communicate on intermediate level.

So, i sent more than 50 job application and I got only one interview. I have impression than I don't fit in german speaking jobs while they would always give advantage to swiss people, but also I applied mostly on english speaking jobs, where I also get impression that there they will give advantage to english natives that come from UK or USA.

Am I right?? Do you have any experience or advice regarding people like me that speak English but are not native English speakers, do we have any chance finding job here in Switzerland?

I am really starting to lose hope that I will ever find a job here.

Every advice is welcome.

Thanks

Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

Hello to everybody here,

I arrived to Switzerland a few days ago for family reasons since we decided to settle down in the Basel area. Currently I am unemployed. My language skills - German, English and Lithuanian, still learning French ( looking for an appropriate language school at the moment). My former education isn't of much value for this country. I have studied law in my home country ( specialization - criminal law) + some experience at international NGO's for women rights and EU institutions in Brussels.

Since at the international level I was kind of struggling with my above-mentioned education the last 3,5 years I used to work as an IT supporter in German and English language. I am not an IT technician though. I started sending my CV three days ago and I am excited what will be the response.

Good luck to all job searchers!
Julija

Hey,

So I am here for 3 months now, also from an Eastern European country. I have a BA in foreign languages (Eng.-Fr.) and I have "aggressively" sent over 150 job applications during this 3 months and got an interview scheduled. So in my opinion you should try more and send between 3-10 job applications /day. The key to success is constancy. I am also learning German and hunting jobs. On a daily basis . I do not speak German yet but I "will" in a few months and then nothing shall stop me to get the dream job

Do not lose hope and keep sending more job applications (even when they require German...you never know)

Best of luck!

I am a native English speaker and it did not help me at all....15 months unemployed here...although that is probably because I am non-EU :P

Thanks to the shitty economy 50 applications for one interview is not uncommon...don't lose hope!

Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

I'm half-Swiss, Half-Filipino. I was born in Switzerland but grew up in the Philippines. I'm completely bilingual (English and German), but I would prefer a job where I can use my excellent English skills.

I'm currently residing in the Philippines, but would immediately return to Switzerland if there was a valid job offer. I would appreciate any feedback and tips.

Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

Without having any idea of what skills/experience you have there's not a lot we can say to help. English isn't a Swiss language so confining yourself to searching for only English speaking jobs might hinder your chances, depending on what field you're looking to work in. Here's a couple of websites for job hunting though:

www.jobs.ch
www.jobup.ch

Good luck.

Re: [Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

My bad. I wasn't sure if I should post that kind of information.

I didn't say that I was looking for "only" English-speaking jobs, I just stated that I would prefer a job where my English skills would be of advantage. Thank you for the links nonetheless.

I've been working as Editorial Manager for our family businesses for the last couple of years, creating newsletters and doing translations (German to English, English to German). Additionally, I was also Team Leader for a Sweden-based company who outsourced their management of online picture-selling to us. Another thing I got going is uploading German and French news for a Swiss HR News company based in Baar.

My main interest though lies in film. I have been active in the local film-making and entertainment industry for quite some time now. I love being behind the camera and pretty comfortable in front of it as well. Farfetched but yeah, bear with me.

Not sure how much call there is for film workers here, TV maybe. The only English mag I can think of is Swiss News, which is monthly and just about to go to digital only.
