Look, I'll boil it down for you.

75K for a post doc is ridiculous.

In Zurich new grads with 5 yr degrees are pulling in 95K.

So either sit on your ass and take it, or learn German and get a better offer.

End of comment.

75K is not ridiculous and is the average Post-doc salary.

Excellent points made by nqnin. Post-doc is not a job so cannot be compared to "Zurich new grads with 5 yr degrees pulling in 95K".

Sorry, I didn't realise this threat was meant for the "elite" intellectuals". Well, I hope you at least cure cancer to compensate for the meager pay.

What you didn't realise is that getting a higher instruction such as a post-doc costs money, and that cost is reflected in your lower salary.

Surprising oversight for someone so succesful as you.

Re: Average salary for post-doctoral scientist

I am into pure sciences. I have done 2 yrs of postdoc already at canada. I am a married man, so just want to know if a married person can survive in Fribourg with 75,000 CHF/yr.

You my friend, kinda sound like an idiot. It's a post-doctoral position. Furthering your knowledge. It's the standard pay for what it is. Not a permanent position, furthering your education. The average post-doc salary in most other countries is about 40,000-60,000 depending on the field and location. Again, post-doc position, Not actual job. Again, not actual job.

I'm sure you didn't realize but you might have read the title of the thread "Average salary for post-doctoral scientist" Key words being 'average salary' and 'post-doctoral' Do you know what we mean by post-doctoral scientist? Not someone who has they're doctorate and is looking for an actual job with a company. We're talking about people who are continuing their education by doing post-doctoral work at a university. Which allows them to make more money when they do go and get a job.

Simple answer: Yes you can.

It will be tight, supporting two people on that income, but it is certainly not impossible. I have survived perfectly adequately in Zurich for three years on significantly less than that, although I am a single person, so costs have been a little less than you might face.

As I've said in other threads on related subjects: It all depends on how badly you want to live in Switzerland, or, in your case, do your particular kind of research.

And the pot washers in the station buffets all seem to get by, somehow - and I shouldn't imagine they earn 75k.

Good luck - you can do it!

Re: Average salary for post-doctoral scientist

Hello all Postdocs,

Does anyone know how much should a Research Assistant earn in ETH Bio field? I saw the salary link on ETH posted here, but how do you define Research Assistant 1 and 2?

With 3 years working experience but 2 of these r relevant lab experience, which category should it be? Again if it is RA 1, should I be expecting the salary range between year 2 and 3.

And who's paying my salary? ETH or from my Prof's funding? Are there any room for negotiation for the salary?
