Alrite, you 2 or 3 , get a room...I don't think anyone is really interested in those specks you are advertising.

Others, tips on cash, savings, tips and links to salary and employment are appreciated, ta.

Back on topic.... it's expensive here. Families have a very tough time saving. It can be done, but when you consider that a crèche (kinderkrippe) is easily 2'000 SFr a month for one child, it makes you wonder how young families survive, let alone save, when both parents have to work.

Aww, thanks people. I am trying hard not to get my professional deformation get me, hahaha. And see things from all sorts angles.

Community service, really...

Yes back to topic.

The best way we have managed to save some serious cash was switch to going home on the bus, using services of local librabries and ludotheque, shop in Aldi, Lidl and over the border. Get specials on meat in Migros/Coop. Cut down on meat, have fish. Make sure our power gets saved (lights, pc, etc not running on sleep mode but switched off, unless I am chasing down some spammers ). Get kids clothes, books, toys from friends, trocs and flee markets, buy all the art supplies in Ikea. Pack lunches, cook in bigger portions, have fruits and nice foods for snacks (instead of preapacked and little juices, kid little portions are so expensive). Not waste food, make nice soups. Have local friends who gladly share their tips on where and how smartly shop.

The whole thread is based on a silly first post though. 1000CHF a month SAVED is an awesome amount of money IMO.

Re: Not able to save any cash in this country - sigh

hmm, strange... my total expenses for month do not exceed 2000 francs, and I include 1 return flight from prague every 2-3 weeks for my girlfriend and most of expenses that we have together. Mkay, I have only 1 room rented out for 580, but still... add 1000 for a small appartment. Almost no restaurants (no need for that @ work, bagets near work are best i ever tasted and super cheap), I rather cook for myself & girlfriend, she appreciates that much more. And I have a car.
You know, if you take your transaction history, there is probably very clear path from salary figure to one that you save. Small expenses, here & there... all is about details.
But if You are the only earning person in family of 3, then I say 1000 chf is a good figure

I have no idea how people are able to live on the salaries here. Im from Australia and I moved across I thought I would be swimming in cash with my 115k salary and low tax. But after living here for 6 or so months Im only saving around 1000 a mth.. if that! HR in the company I work for accidently sent me the salaries of my coworks (handy) and they're earning slightly more that I am - around 2k per year, yet they are buying a house, have 2 cars and 3 kids! I have a new kid, rent is low (1600chf/m), a tiny car, rarly go out and it just seems impossible to save for a house here and pay it off. Am I missing out on something? Is there some amazing thing that people arent telling me?
As soon as you get paid move 2-2.5K into a savings account (mine is with the ZKB) and you won't notice any difference in your standard of living I bet. If you wait until the end of the month then there is nothing to save. It is basic but it really does work.

We regularly put away a grand a month, sometimes more. Isn't there a golden rule of wealth or something? Always put away a 1/10 of your income?
