yeah, but you are alone! arent you?
Yup - but that was your point, wasn't it? Alone in Zürich on less than 5k per month?

glinaa, carlos: i believe you that you manage, but not in ZURICH, as i said!
I live in the Niederdorf. Does that count as Zürich? ;-)

as i said, im saving much for pension funds. if i did not do this, i had more cash savings that would get me to the 3k/month. as a single!!! i do make excel files on spendings, i researched how to save more, just as i said i want to run my basic costs at lowest level. and here i am. yes, i could move to bassersdorf, xyzikon, cowshitsbourg and get my 1800 3room apartment for 1400 chf and a tax reduction, maybe. but thats no option. in Zurich as a single household i wont make it below 4800. it is not working. nothing more to add.

1900 rent (incl. nebenkosten)
280 insurance halbprivat insurance (has top up for glasses etc)
230 zvv 10 zone pass
200 inet and land line fon
160 mobile
40 billag
50 i save up for house hold insurance and law insurance
400 food/fridge/fun (no wintersports, is on top in the season)
sums up to: 3300
funds and insurances in germany 1400 CHF

4700,- that i cant cut

extras: cleaning lady 100/month, shirts for dry cleaner 50/month

roughly 5000 CHF
Yikes. What kind of ZVV pass are you buying that costs that much? That's almost an SBB GA price!

However, the funds that you're saving up for ARE savings. You can easily live without them, though I wouldn't recommend it. Your various telephone and Internet bills can easily be cut down. And your rent is excessive - it's what I pay at my current place, but you can certainly get cheaper in Zürich. If saving is your primary goal, you can get a WG for 600 a month.

Whether you *want* to make those sacrifices is another story, but the point being, you're not just surviving on that money. You've made some choices to take certain luxuries in your life.

Edit: in the meanwhile, there's been a lot of posts on Flow's finances. The moral of the story remains the same, however - it's perfectly feasible to live in Zürich on less, but you've added in luxuries (Internet, phones), and the fact that you're living in Zürich while working quite a ways out. If you're happy with that, great - but don't try to claim that living in Zürich on less can't be done.

i have the 75 for all 3 services. but foning home is 30chf-50CHF/month. my mom has no computer n stuff, no skype possible.

as i said: i went back n forth calculating...doesnt work.
We are just trying to help

http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/pric...ency=CHF#cc=DE

You can call a landline from skype. I use this for calling back to the UK and it only costs 1p per minute which is a bargain. Works out cheaper than just dialing from Swisscom. You can get subscriptions as well as topping up as much as you want.

http://buy.skype.com/paymonthly/#DE|allSubscriptionsTab

For example. I find the call quality better than dialing direct.

Here's a general tip for calling abroad: I use a service called Rebtel. You sign up on their website, let them do their magic, and they give you a local Swiss number which you dial and which redirects your call through their systems to most international locations.

I make two or three international calls a week for a total of about an hour (to their landline) and each call costs about 0.35CHF for the connection + 1.5 rappen per minute.

Doesn't seem like using rebtel will seriously bring down your costs, but it'll save a bit, and its a good service to have if you're dialling abroad regularly.

Kash.

Regarding the original post of this discussion, I noticed that it was posted on the 20th of February... 2009. That's a bit more than 2 years ago, ain't it ? So, has the original poster found a solution since then?

Well.... yes... somehow... and it can give pieces of things to think about... The last message of the original poster was on the 3rd of March... 2010, so a year ago. The message was starting like this :

Quote:
View Post
Hello,

I left Switzerland at the end of last year[...]
So, the original poster has left Switzerland at the end of 2009, less than a year after having started this thread. There are usually many ways to solve a problem, and the solution favored by someone can be radically different than the solution that someone would have chosen. A ground for different opinions in the chosen solution, is that what can be accepted by some, it is out of question for others. Also, some people would choose solution A among A, B, C, while others would choose the solution B among B, C, D, E. So many voices in this forum, so many different views on life, problems, solutions.

/Paul

He still pay 150 chf per month for cleaning and ironing, which he could do himself (not a big job to do when leaving alone) and save 1800 chf per year.

Apart from that one, he already has a GF, so he's already paying some sort of maintenance...

Well, personally I think they are exaggerating a bit on your case. You budget for your life style is quite reasonable. As you said, it's crazy to think everyone is going to walk or cycle to work. So you're not cutting your transportation cost.

But I will give you one tip: Use VOIP Cheap. They give you 3 months of free calls to fixed lines everything you top up you account by E10.

However, as someone else pointed out, you are sending 1400F back to Germany. So your costs to live IN Zurich are much less than 5000F.

thx a lot for the infos for the calls n stuff, really appreciate it!
and as i said...my GF has an iphone now and we use skype, viber, whatsupp etc which has brought down the fon costs to 80 chf (this month, how to keep that up)

the ZVV pass for 10 zones(whole canton of zurich) is 227chf/month. i wanted to buy a GA pass, but i dont travel that much to make it worth having it.

If you buy a yearly 10 zone pass, you get 25% off and it will cost you only 170 chf/month, if you buy an unpersoenlich it would cost 190chf/month and you could sell it on if a year is too long for you. That would save you another few francs.

Re: Not able to save any cash in this country - sigh

There are two ways to increase your savings:
a) Make more money.
b) Save more money.

Your case is, expending wise, similar than mine, but here are the big differences:

Rent - Company pays for it.
Phone bill - Company pays for it.
Unpersoenlich - Company pays for it.

Get into a better company, I'd say.

The latest Cablecom phone package gives you international land line calls for free. I now pay 100 a month for 100mb Internet, HD tv and the phone. I swap everytime there is a better offer and have no issues with them when I do it.

yes, this assumes you buy the annual GA and this takes the monthly cost of it into account. to be honest, the GA is a bit of a luxury. i guess you could eliminate the the 270 per month and instead walk/bike.

the health insurance figure is what i currently pay. there might be a small amount more for liability insurance.
I guess cheaper health insurance is one of the few benefits of living in Schaffhausen
