Work In Zurich Needed ASAP (Teaching English, Editing, Writing)

Hi all -

I was wondering if anyone could help me with employment leads in writing, editing or teaching English. I am an American-born, Ivy-league educated, native speaker of English, currently pursuing a graduate degree in literature and linguistics. I have some experience teaching English, but also worked for about three years for a financial news and data-provider, for whom I did sales and some translation work (between English and Italian). I've also been involved with informal publications, for whom I have done a fair share of editing.

I am looking for work in any of the following areas:

1. TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

2. WRITING IN ENGLISH IN ANY CAPACITY (JOURNALISTIC, WEBSITE CONTENT, CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS, ETC.)

3. EDITING (CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS, WEBSITE CONTENT, COMPANY LITERATURE, UNIVERSITY LITERATURE, ETC.)

4. TRANSLATION (I DON'T YET SPEAK GERMAN, BUT CAN DO TRANSLATIONS FROM ITALIAN/SPANISH/FRENCH INTO ENGLISH AND VICE VERSA)

Does anyone out there have any leads at all? It would be most helpful, as I am starting to get a bit desperate for work I have had some difficulty trying to find a job teaching English, which I thought would probably be the easiest area in which to find work. Please, if you could help with anything at all, respond here or send me a private message. Thanks so much!

Re: Work In Zurich Needed ASAP (Teaching English, Editing, Writing)

Hi there, I work in the web & new media area, and something for sure that many big companies need is someone who can write clear copy "for the web". It is for sure worth the effort of getting more knowledge in this area (writing for the web = use of keywords in the copy, lenght, voice, etc.), because this is starting to finally get the attention of Internet and comms managers.

Sending out a letter to Comms managers from different large companies will not hurt, they are always looking for that extra support.

Re: Work In Zurich Needed ASAP (Teaching English, Editing, Writing)

Hi there...

It sounds to me, judging by your self-proclaimed teaching experience and education, that you'd be a shoe-in for a job teaching English. I have no experience at all teaching children, but I can say that you might have a good chance getting a job teaching adults if you had a CELTA certification. Unfortunately, that takes a bit of time. Depending on your experience, you might be able to get a job somewhere despite not having a CELTA, but you'll have to keep looking as jobs in our business tend to cycle quite a bit.

Another idea, since it sounds like you're hanging around the university, would be to advertise around there to edit theses from students preparing to finish their PhDs or Masters. I've been approached a couple of times for this kind of work, and it seems like nobody quite knows where to get help with this. I looked through a 250-page PhD thesis recently--just for spelling, punctuation, and general readability--and earned a few hundred franks. I'm not sure how steady this work would be, but it's an idea!

PM me if you need any other suggestions, and good luck!
