Working from home for UK company but living in Basel?
Hello folks!
A bit of background first....(always helps, right? ;-)
My girlfriend has just moved to Basel area for a new job. I currently work (in IT) for a large Pharma in the UK. My g/f used to work in France (Lyon) but as we were growing tired of living separate - we decided to go for Basel where there are a lot of Pharma's and a high percentage of jobs in English. I am an Australian of Italian descent (I have dual nationality with Italy and Australia) and my g/f is French. I speak English, Italian (losing this a bit lately though) and pretty decent French. I've started some German lessons too (self study). I have a couple of questions regarding working for a UK company but living in Switzerland.
I am contracting in the UK at the moment, and there might be a chance my boss will allow me to work 3 weeks of the month from home in Basel. However, as I would still be paying tax in the UK - and I currently don't have any residence or work permit for Switzerland - is working from Basel for a UK company even possible?
We have not decided whether we will live in France or Basel yet. I guess if it were in France (as I'm an EU citizen) this should be no problems, but if we live in Basel I guess there would be some complications for sure?
Does anyone here do the same thing? Or have any ideas on if you can be a 'resident' in Basel, but not actual be employed by a Swiss company etc? I guess I could still pay the non-income related taxes in Basel if that's what is required. I know in France, I could pay voluntary charges (national health etc) and have the right to state benefits - I just would not pay income tax in France.
Is there something similar in Switzerland?
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks again, and I hope to be either working in Switzerland for my current company or actually working out there ASAP!
