How long to stay in your first position in Banking before moving internally?

Hi,

I know this is a very general, how long is a peice of string type question but here goes:

When you start in a large multinational company, how long is it before you would consider applying for new positions (without relocation)? Or how long would it be before the employer would want/expect you to move on internally, if you were doing a satisfactory job.

In many industries, the employer would ideally have you doing the job you were recruited for well as long as possible to recoup their investment for that role / hire.

But in banking (eg her ein Switzerland in large banks like UBS & CS) how long would the shortest / longest spell be that you would recommend staying before getting itchy feet in your first position?

I asked this to someone the other day and they said 18 months. Any other suggestions / musings would be welcomed ?

Cheers,
Higgy Baby
