Unemployment benifits while taking up studies

One of my friends (already told him about this forum & he might say hello to you all very soon ) is thinking about resigning from his job in order to do a degree in CH. If he terminates his employment, will he be able to claim unemployment benifits, while he carries on studying?

He is currently working in ZH but plans to study in VD, will this affect the benifits at all?

Thanking you all in advance

If you resign, you will lose several months unemployment benefits. Here it says that you won't receive anything -> http://www.easyexpat.com/en/geneva/w...t-benefits.htm

You can tell "your friend" that that is not how unemployment works.

from what I know your friend will not be eligible. For your friend to be eligible he/she should be actively looking for work, not studying

How do you think it will work?

I think, you can get some benefits if you have worked 12 months during the last 2 years

You might well think this, the RAV doesn't !

It's for valid unemployment, not just a hand out as you quit your job voluntarily for whatever reason

Re: Unemployment benifits while taking up studies

I believe that once you are in the unemployment system, you can then join a few courses to help you find work - or to improve your chances of finding something.

Learning German for instance. Cv writing etc.

But you still must be actively looking for a job in the meantime.
At least my wife did this anyway.

After a certain time registered with the RAV, you will be encouraged to retrain and look for jobs not in your normal work sphere.

Perhaps you may be allowed to enrol in a night school - I will get the missus to check this out next time she "signs on".

you are encouraged to do things that help you get a job, but full time education is a definite NO

Re: Unemployment benifits while taking up studies

Unemployment benefits are considered an insurance. You have to be employable and free to accept a new job at any moment.
Studying towards a degree means you are not available.
Living off the government to pay your studies is ....

I'm quite sure that it's not allowed and if it is done anyway, they might ask that person to repay the benefits they received.

Considering that there are people (sometimes with children) in a really difficult situation without a job, who really need the RAV until they find a job, I find the question distasteful.

Find a part-time job to finance the studies.

Re: Unemployment benifits while taking up studies

I have a similar question to the OP's ..

I am currently employed full time, and have been for the past year and a half. I will be starting a full time study programme in late September, so my original plan was to work until August, have a couple of weeks vacation, and then start my studies.

However, I've been told that I can be expecting a letter making me redundant at the end of this month or the next, so the longest i can work is until end of April / May. This leaves me 3/4 months without a job, as I don't think the probability of finding a new one for just a couple of months is too high.

So my question is this: Would I be entitiled to RAV unemployment benefits for those 3/4 months of the period between being made redundant and starting my studies? Thanks!

I apologise if this has been covered before!

Re: Unemployment benifits while taking up studies

Normaly you should be entitled to RAV benefits, but you will still have to look for work in this period. Whether you have any chance of finding anything is different matter.....
