job application without reference?

hello everyone,

I would like to apply for a similar job in a an other company. I am ready to send out my CV and cover letter, but I am wondering how do I deal with the references? I do not want my current boss to know that I am looking for an other job.

would it be ok to send the cv without reference names, or should I add the names of my previous bosses (not from this company)?

so, how do you do when you want to move out without risking to lose the job?

HELP!

Re: job application without reference?

Put on your CV "references available on request" then if they are interested in you they can discuss who they should ask for references,

Generally they shouldn't approach your current employer until they are ready to offer you a position, and then only after checking with you.

It'd say it's ok to lie to your old company in this situation. Tell them you want a "Zwischenzeugnis" (which is a letter of reference that doesn't imply you're leaving the company). Make up a reason why you need it - there are all kinds of situations you might need a Zwischenzeugnis for - for certain courses, off-the-job training etc.

Maybe tell your current boss your new landlord wants a Zwischenzeugnis to see what kind of tenant you may be.

Re: job application without reference?

Ask for the Zwischenzeugnis, your employer is obliged to make you one.

It might be a wise decision to be quiet about your job search for now. However this depends a bit on your situation. A friend of mine dropped the bomb (among the lines: "I need this and that afternoon off" - "Why?" - "applications at your competitors") and his salary was increased on the spot. But he had been underpaid and the company could afford it, I don't say this works always!

Re: job application without reference?

I am in the process now and did not ask for a reference yet. I do have one from 2002 though.

If you have older references, the prospective employer will like those too.

Re: job application without reference?

My current employer was happy with references from the UK (on request of course).
Although, I'm just the hired help and the permie overhead is usually greater.

They did not ask for references from my previous (and only) Swiss employer.
Oddly enough, that Swiss employer never asked for references at all...

Re: job application without reference?

For my current job, I've passed 3 interviews, and though I've given to my current employer some names, it seems that he has not contact them (at least one of the referees hasn't received any request).

I'm not sure if the "Zwischenzeugnis" works very well in this situation, your current employer will think: "There is a probability that my employee wants to apply somewhere".

Similarly, I was more than a little surprised that my current employer, who paid a joining bonus & a reloc package did not contact any of my references .... CV was more than enough.

in my humble opinion, this can be used as a shot across the bows .... leave them guessing. A colleague of mine did just this as he was interviewing for jobs in Sweden. Our boss got wind due to his request & offered him a spanking expanded position & he now heads up our Nordics office from home in Mälmo ....

Ah, and one of my friends who owns a out-sourceing software company says he merely bases on interviewing and an on-site test to judge his applicant.

Re: job application without reference?

Remember we are in the land of the risk-averse, and paper qualifications and paper references are worshipped as insurance against a bad hire, even when then are meaningless...

Re: job application without reference?

Then you get into psychometric testing & assessment centres, and a world of fun:..."Do you prefer cats or dogs ?"

What's the problem in letting him know??? The good thing could be: he raises your paycheck, he lowers your working hour etc. just to KEEP YOU. If you look for something els it would scare him!!!!
