Are you happy with your job?

I saw a programm yesterday that mentioned in England 2 out of 3 people are not happy in their job and wanted to see what the general figures are here.

I think anyone who is happy and enjoys their work is lucky. Sometimes you can have a bad job but with nice people, or a nice job with bad people.

I wonder if anyone truley has a nice job with nice people with a nice pay and nice hours............im sure not!

Can't complain. It strikes me that most people would not have come to Switzerland for a job they didn't like though....?

Re: Are you happy with your job?

yeah i have to also play the love card. I had my own business before I came to zurich, then took a really basic job.

Things are better now, I like my job, but lets just say there are points that could be better and im not sure about the future.

I dont know nowdays if you can really look long term as most people change job every few years!

Re: Are you happy with your job?

I'm definitely one of those lucky ones that loves my job, and wouldn't do anything else - well, not permanently, anyway. That's not to say I don't have bad days, of course I do, but I'm definitely happy with my work.

Re: Are you happy with your job?

There was an interesting article in last year's Harvard Business Review entitled 'Why They Call It Work', by E.L. Kersten. It was named as one of the top 20 breakthrough ideas for 2006. Unfortunately, you can't view the article without a subscription, but his basic premise is that job satisfaction (or dissatisfaction, as it were) arises because "employees ... have been taught to expect too much from their jobs." He further states that: "Employees should not demand that companies imbue their lives with meaning." He doesn't address all sources of potential employee dissatisfaction in his article (such as a nightmare boss or conflicts with co-workers), but he does make some interesting points about employee expectations. If you can get your hands on a copy of the article, it's an interesting read.

Much more interesting than the article, however, is Kersten's company, Despair inc. You may have seen their items floating around offices and college dorm rooms: Despair. Inc. are the ones who make all those posters and calendars that poke fun at the inspirational/motivational product market. They use slogans such as:
Failure

When your best just isn't good enough.

Worth
Just because you're necessary doesn't mean you're important.
Their stated business philosophy is that:
"AT DESPAIR, INC., we believe motivational products create unrealistic expectations, raising hopes only to dash them. That's why we created our soul-crushingly depressing Demotivators® designs, so you can skip the delusions that motivational products induce and head straight for the disappointments that follow!'

Their product line is hilarious, and browsing their website is a highly entertaining way of killing twenty minutes. Especially if you already hate your job and are looking for yet another excuse to goof off on company time.

HeatherM

PS-In response to the original question in the poll, I definitely fall into the category of happily employed.

Re: Are you happy with your job?

I'm very happy with my job, still quite new and wet behind the ears so to speak, but enjoying applying my old-job skills to a totally new area!

I got some great advice on this last year, I was miserable as hell in a job I hated, a house I didn't like living in, and spent all my time moaning about it, the advice I got was twofold,

1) You'll never be 100% happy. But you spend a third of your life at work, and a third of your life in bed, so make sure that you get those two places right and the rest can look after itself.

2) Instead of expending a lot of energy wailing and complaining about how bad your life is, put the same effort into working out what bits are getting you down, and changing them for the better.

6 weeks after that advice, I'd moved from Yorkshire to Devon. 6 months after that, I started this job. 3 months after *that*, I'm in Switzerland

It's amazing how far you can go in a year if you channel your efforts positively

Re: Are you happy with your job?

my mate's fed up at the moment and when he finally got off his bum, it seems the marketplace for his skillset isn't so bad. He has two interviews next week with Fortune 100 Cookies (why do people feel the urge to big-up their employer).

so if you're fed up, do something about it. He's smiling again now because of it

Re: Are you happy with your job?

Some advice I got a while back about your job, which I've always remembered.

There are 3 things to a job: the people, the money, the job itself
You need at least 2.

Simple, but I can identify my last few jobs with this.

Re: Are you happy with your job?

If I have to be working a normal-hours, normal-business job, I am incredibly happy with my job. Interesting work, good people. The happiest I've been at a corporate job.

I'd much rather, however, be tour photographer for punk and death metal bands....

Re: Are you happy with your job?

I absolutely love my job. I live, eat, breathe and sleep photography. It's (almost) all I've ever done. It's taken me to far off lands and I've met (and photographed) lots of interesting and sometimes famous folk and famous events and been paid for doing so.

At the moment I shoot adverts, brochures and catalogue stuff but in the past I've done everything from autopsy stuff, 1st division (as it was then) football, travel, scientific, paparazzi, hard news, riots, weddings, agency work, doorstepping and many other disciplines.

Right now? I photograph from 8 - 5pm for the firm I work for and at the weekend I shoot models (both male and female) for a project that I'm working on.

Do I like my job? Take a look at my signature.
