Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

I have been offered a job on CHF120K in Geneva. I have no idea if that is poor, good or excellent. I was told by the HR person that I could "live like a King" on that when offered the job. I am not convinced at all.

Can I get some help on that please? What would my net monthly income be?
I have an above average to high standard of living in the UK on roughly GBP 45K.
I don't want to move to Geneva and , whilst pound for pound I am obviously on more, live like a student. I mean what would be the point?

I am single, no dependents, like socialising (though don't know anybody in Geneva) and enjoy the odd beer. I am not a great cook so will probably eat out a lot.

I also don't want to live a hundred miles away either from the job (the office is very centrallly located in Geneva). I hear accomodation is very expensive you see.

Is 120K good or should I push for more?

No you need at least a 1000K a month to even be able to afford a 1 bedroom studio the size of a broom cupboard!

I don't want to move to Geneva
This is the single most important statement in your entire post.

If you don't want to go, don't go.

Even if they offer you 500 000 CHF, you will be unhappy there.

120K a year is very very good, you will have a very comfortable life is you decide to come, otherwise if you don't want it, let me know the details and i'll gladly do the job for that salary.

I am doing "research". This is research is it not? I would have thought my thread is research. Please don't curse either. Why the anger? I feel I have asked a very reasonable and intelligent question. Who said anything about being "unhappy"?

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

Not really 1000K is 1'000'000, you'll be on 10K a month probably 8K after all deductions and taxes, so net you'll be on the equivalent of 4'800 a month.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

120K is more than enough for a single profesional, but you'll not "live as a King"

at 120K per year you'll be getting roughly 6000.- per month net.

You'd need 1500.- per month for a decent small appartment, make that 2000 for a good one

some 1500 for all your expenses like food, transportation, electricity etc.

some 600-1000 if you plan to lease a car.

So all in all 4000.- to have a very comfortable single life.

You can count then on some 2000- extra for saving, or leisure.

You'll be fine. I can't guarantee you'll be happy but money will be more than what you need

simon: My mistake yes 1000K = 1mill. No arguments there. So, back to the subject in hand. Are you now saying that monthly income is not enough?

It would be research if you did some search as well. This question is asked at least once per week here.

Anw long story short. A standard salary here is a third of what you will be getting. And those people have families to support.

But if you want to get arsy with everyone who posts in reply to your rather dumb question, please do go ahead.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

I think it's not a bad salary. Depends on what you spend money on.

You will have a higher take home, but you'll also need to pay for your own health insurance.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Geneva?

120k is a decent amount, roughly 9k a month.

You'll find that about 1.5k will go to taxes, and the rest is up to you depending on what are your needs and wants.

Dining out will be expensive... anything from 30chf up to 100 and beyond (if you're trying to please yourself).

Housing is the deal breaker... you might get really lucky of course, but it's absurdly difficult to find a place these days. 30-50 meter square flats in the center of Geneva are going for 2000-3000chf a pop. I personally prefer the idea of living outside and paying that much for something 2 or 3 times as large. But then you'll need to invest in a car or use public transport (luckily, public transport is rather good in this country).
