Question re finding a maman de jour in Morges/Lausanne area

Following a job offer for a 50%, afternoons only job I'm now on the hunt for a maman de jour for my two year old son. I have registered with the relevant local networks but wanted to advertise on here too in case anyone has an existing maman de jour who might have a place available. Please PM me if you do...French or English speaking would be fine.

One thing I am a little confused about is whether it is ok to contact a maman de jour directly and would they therefore not be regulated by the local network. Has anyone had any experience of this?

Thank you!

Re: Question re finding a maman de jour in Morges/Lausanne area

Oficially, all maman de jour must be registered and supervised by Morges center for kid daycare. If you find one on your own, she will most probably be registered at the center, you can contact her on your own but the paperwork will be sorted by the officer in the centralized daycare center. I have found a great one on my own, had to change the center registration, though, since I found her in a different village. The center people were helpful, although it is a pain in the butt, when you need to change hours, etc, very very long process (2mo in advance). In insures quality, somewhat, but throws sticks under the family and maman de jours feet (very inflexible). Our local center was not helpful much, infact they got back to us about 3mo after we registered with them. It was only when they realized we were outsourcing from a different community they came with some options, which were completely unsuitable for us as well, they just served for them to help out with employing their own registered staff. The good thing is, though, it is the same registration for maman de jour as your potential waiting list for creche and it is, of course, a lot more convenient, to have to drop your kid of close to your house. Now, you could just post a petite annonce yourself in a local Morges paper, get a friend to translate it for you, speeds up things enormously. You can also post an add in Migros, Coop, local playgroup. Then, you can sort out the paperwork and whatnot after you already got somebody. I think Morges will be easier than where we live, more options, we do have a 3yr waiting list for creches

Re: Question re finding a maman de jour in Morges/Lausanne area

Thanks MusicChick... My experience so far has certainly been frustrating. After I saw your post I checked this out with the local network and they confirmed they would organise the paperwork if I found my own maman de jour (although this seems to be a little unfair to everyone else sitting patiently on the waiting list) but maintain that we cannot source a maman de jour from another commune until all possibilities have been exhausted in your own network. I had already contacted surrounding communes and they say the same thing, they can't help us even though it is geographically more convenient in terms of where we live and where I'll be working. Have had just one option from the local network which was with a very nice lady although her French wasn't great and the flat was so small and cluttered with junk. I felt it just wasn't a suitable place for children but the standards here seem to vary massively and so much seems to be down to luck. Perhaps I'll just be a good girl and settle down to being a full-time mum for the rest of my life but thanks again for the advice!

Re: Question re finding a maman de jour in Morges/Lausanne area

As explained by MusicChick - you have to be registered and properly vetted by the authorities to be a 'maman de jour' - your premises also have to comply to safety, etc, requirements. And of course you've to be properly Insured, and the fact you get paid for doing this job must be declared to insurance, or it could be void in the case of accidents.

One other reason for using a registered 'maman de jour' is that you can get substantial subsidies from the commune towards the cost. Her are the figures for my area, which may be slightly different from yours:

Funds are provided by employers (54%) and the K/Canton (46%)

- pre-school (0-4) the official cost per day for a child is CHF105. The above fund pays 27% - rest of cost CHF80 is paid between parent/s and the Commune where you live 39.5% by Commune, 33.5% by parent/s.

- place para-scolaire (4-12), for looking after older children before school, lunch and after school, CHF70/60 depending on hours required per day. The fund pays 22%, remainder of CHF60 is spilt Commune/parent/s 34.3/43.7.

No subsidy will be paid for un-official/unregistered 'maman de jour' - makes a huge difference.

Re: Question re finding a maman de jour in Morges/Lausanne area

Same to you too MC

Actually I had no idea about the large subsidies available for child-care until I attended a meeting of the local education board recently. I was surprised as I don't think it was mentioned before on EF- where we've had many comments about the huge cost of child-care. It is one of those things which may well NOT be advertised, and you either know about it or you don't- so well worth asking your Commune/Gemeinde, I'd say

maisiebrooks, so sorry you are having a hard time of it. Every cloud has a silver lining - so how about making enquiries about the requirements and training to become maman de jour, and feed back. Certainly seems to be an area where there may be many opportunities - I wonder how the authorities would take to someone wanting to set up a bilingual facility. Bonne chance.
