I.T Contractor seeks cleaning job – advice please!

Strange title I know, so I will elaborate as quickly as I can:

I have recently moved from London to Zurich with my Swiss wife as she wants to study here and become a physiotherapist. So, top of my to-do list is of course...find a job! I’ve been looking on and off from the UK since the beginning of the year and pretty intensely for the last month since I arrived here. I’ve been in I.T for the last 15 years (Mostly Help Desk/Support orientated work) but the problem I’m finding is that I can’t see a single job to apply for that doesn’t need a good grasp of the German language, so I’m not even getting to the sending my CV stage.

No surprises with the language requirements and I can totally understand why companies in Switzerland ask for it. With this in mind, I am dedicating several hours every day to self study and practice. (Before anybody recommends I take a paid course, I can’t really afford one at the moment, plus my experience of German courses/teachers back in England didn't always warrant the fees). But I know it will take many, many months before I am confident enough in my German to apply for one of these jobs.

So, to the point of the title! Where is the best place to find non-professional jobs? I’m prepared to work in a kitchen, clean, walk dogs, any kind of physical work, and obviously office work would be an option if it doesn't require high level German. I just need to get out, earn a little money, and most importantly, interact with some German speaking people. Back home in England I could probably just go to the local job centre for this kind of work but I can’t seem to find a similar service here.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I am surprised you are having such problems finding an IT role.

Drop your CV into Stamford Consultants - they are opposite St Annehof - so a personal visit if you have the time would be worthwhile. In my experience they are by far the best agents in Switzerland for finding IT roles.

Re: I.T Contractor seeks cleaning job – advice please!

I got a job here in IT here without an initial requirement for German. I understand that the hiring policy has now changed, but the firm is paying for German lessons anyway. There may be companies out there still that don't require German on joining.

I find your desire to work, no matter what, entirely admirable. Try Hays recruitment. The Swiss version is much better than the UK...

Application specific experience: Certified Lotus Notes Professional, Microsoft MCTS in Windows XP. Not application specific but I'm also ITIL qualified.

Analytical experience: Some testing and creating testing procedures for new software releases.

No experience with financial systems, tiny bit with SQL but not enough to warrant an appearance on my CV, no SAP.

For the last five years I was Manager of the I.T Helpdesk for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and that role dictated that I deviate slightly from the front line technical stuff. I became more involved in creating help desk procedures and other ITIL related work, and as well as managing the Help Desk I got more involved in project work.

Thanks for all your responses so far!

If you're mainly doing process and management stuff now it shouldn't make much difference, but these certifications might need a bit of updating for most companies now, most of whom have ditched Notes and are rapidly fleeing XP.

Re: I.T Contractor seeks cleaning job – advice please!

Testing jobs are becoming more offshored - or competence centred (an oxymoron for those who have experienced them).

However procedures and "bigger picture" skills would help towards:

IT Project Leader (not necessarily manager)
Business Analyst
CMMI Role
Programme Office - business/it side.

Swisslinx and Stamford are well connected with the big companies - and will have a list of current openings - they should also help you find a suitable path to tread down.

Hi

I think you should have no problem finding work without German. It might take some time though.

For employers it shows endeavour if you are studying German whilst seeking work, so if you can enrol in a low cost school, it will benefit you.

Would you work in Basel?

Or this:

http://www.jobs.ch/en/job/Informatio...2987561/61/1/0

I also suggest contacting directly Credit Suisse and UBS, they are going through a major recrruitment drive at the moment (based on their job adverts). Many jobs ask for German but I think you may be able to get around this with some of the roles.

http://www.jobs.ch/en/job/Banking-In...2958836/23/1/0

Go to www.jobs.ch and search under 'support english' and also 'support english ITIL' and see what comes up.

Good luck and let us know how you go!

Oh, and I forgot to mention, having a work permit via your swiss spouse is a huge asset at the moment. Firms are having trouble getting approval for these for Non - EUs so this will certainly work in your favour.

Try Cognizant Technology Solutions. For a job in IT of course. It'll be a shame to get into anything else.

If you have not sent any CVs so far, than how do you know you would have been rejected if you did?

There is a huge competition in a cleaning jobs as well. Do not think it is easy to get one. There are tons of people well qualified and ready to start. And these type jobs, usually, are filled with a word of mouth.

Start sending your CVs now.

Do not worry about language requirements. If language was a key factor, you would never ever get the job, so your efforts to learn German are within "nice to have" area. Nothing more.

Quite some confusion in this post .

The op does not have a work permit via his Swiss spouse. He does not need a work permit at all.

A non-EU spouse of a Swiss citizen does need a work permit but this has no restrictions so companies should have no difficulty at all with that type of permit.

Re: I.T Contractor seeks cleaning job – advice please!

Like others here, from the min-cv posted, I would suggest looking for team leader positions, ITPL, othe project mgt, and roles in testing - often companies have outsourced the testing but keep the test mgt onshore.

Yes true, about EUs.

The point I was making was in relation to non EU B permit spouse. There is no difficulty with this permit for those that have it, of course.
