List of Japanese firms and/or firms that require Japanese in Zurich?

Hello,

I've been visiting this forum quite a bit and it's been nice to see how helpful people are.

I am a Japanese national who grew up in the Netherlands, and speak fluent Japanese, Dutch, English, and have good knowedge in German and intermediate French. Currently taking courses for the latter two and I am confident I will become fluent within a short period of time once I live in an environment where the language is spoken. I have 12 yrs experience in Business Development and Marketing (leading and training a team) in hospitality, Translating/Interpreting, and PA to top management in entertaining and banking.

I am trying to find a list of MNCs, Japanese or Swiss firms in Zurich that require Japanese language skills along with other foreign languages so I could apply for jobs, however have been unsuccessful so far. Also contacted the Swiss Japanese Chamber of Commerce and was told they cannot disclose such list and was instead provided with a magazine info of Commerce in Germany... Would someone pls have some info or advice?

So far I have registered on many of the major recruitment agencies online but receiving one rejection after another to my applications... and I feel the barrier of being non EU is high in terms of the WP!

Also, a Swiss friend of mine has passed my CV to a well known Swiss company and apparently they seemed very interested in me. It's been over a month but no interview yet. When my friend contacted them a week ago, their answer was "tell her HR will contact her", so it's not a rejection yet...but am wondering how long this is going to take...

Any advice or info is very much appreciated, thanks!

Thanks so very much for all the links, I truly appreciate it!

Most of the jobs seem to be in areas other than Zurich...but I will keep on looking. As suggested, I will also introduce myself in the introduction section, thanks again

Switzerland is a small place and the fantastic public transportation makes it even smaller.

There are hordes of people who live in Zurich ( for example at Dietikon ) but work in Basel, as an example.

Using Singapore as an example, you'd certainly not want to restrict your job search to eg Bukit Timah when all of Singapore is easily accessible.

I'd suggest you do not restrict your search to Zurich - just my two rappen and all the best in your efforts to secure a job and permit.

i think perhaps you can approach this from another angle, and look at the career section of these MNC's homepages and look for positions in Zurich, most career sections have a search filter that allows this

Re: List of Japanese firms and/or firms that require Japanese in Zurich?

Jrspet, I think I have been in Singapore way too long I still remember when I just moved here, I told the real estate agent I was looking for an apartment up to 30 mins away from the city centre/work place (which is heaven compared to the 1+hr norm in Tokyo...) and his answer was "wah! 30 mins is so far!" But you're right, I should also look into the neighboring areas of Zurich.

Hi Hsiang, thanks for the tip, will def do so!

Re: List of Japanese firms and/or firms that require Japanese in Zurich?

Years ago while I was between jobs, I wanted to gather information on one of the middle eastern countries. I walked into the OSEC office in central Zürich and for a small fee, they gave me a list of companies that did business in / with that specific country in which I was interested. You can google OSEC and get additional info.

Good luck and welcome.

"It's been over a month but no interview yet"

Don't Panic...

The first thing to learn about Switzerland is that some things take looonger here than elsewhere. Job hunting is one of them and yes, terribly frustrating. Been there.

You seem to have an excellent profile, why focus on Japanese? There are 120 Million Japanese, not even counting the ones speaking the language elsewehere. You on the other hand have aparently a CV that is not that common and quite strong in some areas... so look for the other strengths besides your language skills!

And a last tip: Simply ignore some lines as "fluent (Swiss-)German necessary" in job profiles. These are standard text blocks...

Re: List of Japanese firms and/or firms that require Japanese in Zurich?

Treverus, it indeed seems I need to get used to the slow pace... but am not giving up hopes for this company until an official rejection comes in... and I guess it's also the worst time of the year, summer holiday season
They say patience is virtue, right? Guess I will have to practise this then...

If possible, I certainly do not want to restrict myself to Japanese related jobs, but I just thought that would be my selling point when trying to obtain the oh-so-difficult WP, since there are many people who have business development/sales/marketing experience.

Re "fluent German required" being a standard line... really? I found a PR/Comms Manager job that I am interested in, that is looking for people from various backgrounds, no specific cultural mould, etc which fits my profile but it says "fluent in English, German and French written and verbal" and wasn't sure if I should even bother applying as I am not fluent (yet) in the latter 2....

Re: List of Japanese firms and/or firms that require Japanese in Zurich?

Hi Summergirl.

I am a Vietnamese (lady) but I can speak Japanese so-so. I am also searching for a Japanese company/ firm list. I am now in Thurgau canton.
Before , I used to work many years for The Japanese firms in my country.
In my experience, You should ask Jetro.ch, because they have all profiles of Japanese businesses in Switzerland. Every years they send the update list to each company Japanese director.
Because you are Japanese native speaker , You may convince them to disclose the list for you. I f you can got it , Pls. share information with me !!!!
